A hard start kit helps the compressor start. Inrush current (LRA) of a motor that a gen will start does not translate into generator surge rating, IMO. Generator surge rating, IMO, should represent what a gen can handle for 2-5 seconds or a few minutes per hour. Maybe apples/oranges.

Power factor is real vs. apparent power. You do not multiply power factor times rated output to get anything. I think it is more like the gen has to make 10 Amps to deliver 8 Amps to the load. 8/10 is 0.8PF.

IMO, Yanmar > Onan when it comes to MEP-016s. I like the pull rope a lot. The MEP-016D uses a Yanmar L70. I would trade one of my 701As for a very nice 016D. The Onan single cylinder Diesel is a stout, good motor, IMO, too, but I just like the Italian/Japanese Yanmars.

When you change the switch, you change the wiring to the terminals. The convenience outlet on the front panel is for lights or whatever and is not affected by the output switch located inside the box.
