Most of the trailers I've seen have had tires that looked good from a distance, with good tread, but did not pass close inspection. I always bring a farm jack and at least two spares when recovering a GL trailer. I say be prepared and inspect them closely before you take them on the highway.

You can use the existing front panel variable resistor (pot) with the SX460. It should be a 750 Ohm pot. To set it just put the front panel variable resistor in the middle of its travel and use the volts adjustment on the SX460 to set the output to 120V or 240V or whatever your target output...

I, personally, prefer the SX460. It has low frequency cutout and is a more modern design. You can put new diodes in a VR but you still have other old components in there. On the other hand the old stuff was well made and robust.

I'm like 10 for 10. Most have been 3kW Diesels, though. One 003A runs but has crusty fuel tank and bad DC charging stator. Most just needed fuel system flush and minor repair like a cable or something. One had fuel and oil, but no battery, and fired up immediately.

If you made sparks you need to find and fix the damage. If there is a fuse it should be shown somewhere in the TM. There isn't usually a fuse between a battery and a circuit breaker, though.

There is a rotary switch to change the gauge to read different outputs. Have you tried different switch settings?

Windings do fail. They can go short or open. Sometimes they check out OK (like 0.7 Ohms) and then short or open under load. I have an 003 with a bad stator.

Look for a tag on the gen head, right behind the motor. I'm pretty sure my 016E has a tag that says 3kW 60Hz. It may just have a NSN number. If so, you can look that up. See pic. What does that tag say?

Look at the red label on the voltage regulator. It should have wiring instructions for 3kW, 5kW, 60Hz, 400Hz, etc. The red, black, and white wires should correspond to something on the chart on the red label on the voltage regulator. I'll bet you'll find it is set for 3kW 400Hz.
