To be safe I would get a Class "A" CDl because the trailer will have air brakes and the combo will be close to 26,000 empty so any load you carry will be over the 26,000 weight limit for a lower class license depending on your state !! That is what i would do to be safe !!

It should be easy to pull the short shaft from between the rear drives and only drive with the front drive axle pulling and it should not effect the sprag and it should work as a 4x4 and give you some more mileage with less drag on the drive line and increase your mileage !!

Just look for a set of M939 5 Ton Series truck axles they come with full air brakes !! You could look for a Good M939 parts parts truck and use those axles !!
