About to pick up my MEP 003A

That panel would cost me a bit over $80 delivered, but there sure is a lot of stuff on it for $80. The description says two meters are % rated current, not power, but it's hard to tell if that's correct. You can make a shunt to sense current, but I'm sure you know that if you're working with...

    Compression Testing on MEP 002A/003A

    I wouldn't want to go over 28 or 29 Volts. Here's a link about charging lead-acid batteries: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_the_lead_acid_battery

Exhaust on an MEP 002A ENGINE only....

The MEP-002A has a muffler under the sheet metal cover. I've heard of units that had additional mufflers and they seemed to run fine.

MEP -002A Fuel Pump Needed, or not?

That's valuable information, thanks. It opens up a lot of possibilities for pumpless fuel tank configurations.

    MEP-002a battery draining?

I thought I read in one of the manuals that after a particular date, the battery drain was corrected so you didn't have to disconnect the battery if the generator is not going to be run for a while, but I can't find it now. I may be mixing things up with something else. (?) Anyway, I just...

    Mep-005a Aux Fuel Solenoid

You probably know this, but testing rectifiers with modern digital meters doesn't always give you good results. If the meter has a diode test mode, it should work OK, but if you try to use the Ohms scale(s), you'll probably get false readings. Old analog meters work as intended, and are likely...

    Mep 002a Auxiliary Pump Lift?

As I posted above, you might try simply relocating the auxiliary pump to your oil tank, as long as you don't need it in the original place for other purposes. It should easily handle the job from that end of the line. Alternatively, you could put a similar pump at your tank and install a...

    Mep 002a Auxiliary Pump Lift?

Keep us posted please, I'm interested in what you come up with. (Also, thanks Jerry.)

    Mep 002a Auxiliary Pump Lift?

It's easy enough to run a test. Since the aux pump just pumps to the built-in tank when the float switch opens the aux pump's solenoid valve, you can run the test without even running the engine. Take the fuel level in the built-in tank down enough to make the float switch call for fuel, and...

MEP -002A Fuel Pump Needed, or not?

That 2.3 feet per psi is for water. It's more like 2.7 feet per psi for diesel fuel. I don't think the injector pump really needs the full pressure of even one pump to function properly, but as stated, it does need enough pressure to be able to return enough fuel to stay cool, and I...

    MEP - 002 A Crankcase Oil

15W-40 rated for diesel service is commonly used and readily available under many brands.

MEP -002A Fuel Pump Needed, or not?

I doubt if the flow is the full capacity of the pump. It doesn't take much restriction to slow down these impulse type pumps. Just run a test, putting the return into a container so you can measure the flow over a given time, and you'll know the answer. My guess is that the return is a lot...

    Both my MEP-002a units run!

I have a couple similar pumps in an old Bluebird motor home. They were very gummed up and had clogged filters when I got them. They can be completely disassembled and cleaned, but it's been a long time and I can't remember if there are O-rings or gaskets that need to be replaced before...

    MEP 003A No start

Yes, I'm sure xylene will work very well, but I don't think it's quite as easy to find as lacquer thinner. Lowe's carries lacquer thinner, at least around here. It contains toluene as well as acetone and glycol ether, so it is pretty aggressive with varnish. I'll have to try some xylene next...

    MEP 003A No start

I haven't had much luck with PB Blaster. I have much better luck with lacquer thinner for things that get stuck from old fuel making goo/varnish. If course if it works for you, more power to PB blaster! :p

    MEP 003A No start

Reading about this reminded me that my MEP-003A smokes and clanks a little from the blower end cylinder pair when starting in cold weather. I've been meaning to check the glow plugs, so tonight I went out with my meter. The 2nd cylinder from the blower end had a terminal that was rusty enough...

    MEP 003A No start

Paul, the manifold heaters are in series with each other, but the series pair is in parallel with the four glow plugs, so you still need to disconnect them to measure their resistance.

MEP -002A Fuel Pump Needed, or not?

Actually, the auxiliary fuel pump is always running when in the "Prime and run, auxiliary fuel" position. It's the solenoid valve after the pump that opens and closes to send fuel to the built in tank when needed. Of course, when the solenoid valve is closed, the auxiliary fuel pump doesn't...

    Calling all Generator Owners

Caswell's phenolic epoxy liner may be something to consider instead of the POR products. It's one of the few liners that's resistant to the current gasoline blends, for example, and makes a thicker coating than the POR stuff. Also, since it's a 2-part epoxy, it doesn't have to air dry to...

    Off Grid, alternate approach

I don't know who made your sine wave inverter, but I think I'd contact them and see if there's a circuit board pot you can adjust to change the voltage at which it does its low voltage shutdown. You're much better off with a modern inverter than the old transformer type that's much less efficient.
