An A3 (98) (ninety eight) that was up on all 6 tires sold on GSA for under $4k. If I had have had the money......well you know. It's serial was over 5000, so one of the last. In my opinion, that is the best truck to bob (if you don't want the size of a 5 ton). Bobbing is shortening the...
What size lines are you using?
Since I'm a 4x4, a 50-50 system and am 1 1/2" piston, I want to keep the size large, at least until it splits to each wheel. I'm looking at 1/4" going to 3/16".
I like what JEGS says about the copper nickel lines; "They are strong as steel, rust proof and easier to work with than any brake line on the market."
That sounds good to me...will be my choice as I redo mine.
Here is an interesting discussion about polymer coated lines from Napa. Even green available, I think.

I have 6 of these cylinders new old stock that have the wrong pistons. They have a flat piston, not one with a V. If anyone has some old wheel cylinders that we could recover pistons, please PM me.
I've put them in the classified since I'm going to use the 1 1/2" size on my A3 4x4 but I...
While you don't seem to be replacing steel lines, there is a bit of debate about using spring wound lines. What happens there, is that the spring holds debris and then moisture, rusting them faster than plain steel. Thus if you have to replace some steel lines...just use plain steel, not...
TC is rather simple inside....you can do it. I did my 817 TC. Mine may have been a one of a kind, it was brown and appeared new (not green) but the output shaft wobbled and was lose to move the shaft. I found that it was new, but they had not set the bearing preload and all of the (3) shafts...
There was an A3 that sold in North Carolina at GSA that had one of the last serial numbers and was a "98"....was up on all tires too. It would have the yellow, not green Cat. Sold under $4k....man I wish I had had some money.
Good write up. I wanted to go to Oshkosh this year but didn't...just like the year before and the year before that. Sounds like a great time, something your boys will remember forever. I used to go every year, back when we were building "experimental" planes. I helped on a "Veri-eze" and a...
Yep. I can't understand it, I have a full set of bearings, seals and flange gaskets for (the 2) 5 ton rear axles for about half of what they cost individually in the classified and no takers. Amazing more people don't need bearings.
It looks like you enjoyed your outing...have fun.
They made 5,600 of the A3's (a small production number) and it was the only model (of the 545) that used the locking feature (1545), making it a rare bird. I believe a committee was responsible for that decision, instead of going to a larger or OD tranny. Alison stopped supporting the 1545 a...
Use bales of straw. I have recovered several beds on uhaul car trailers and the bale in the car track trick works great.
See the middle photo, bottom series, that's looking down the inner rails. Yes, 34" outside but you don't need something fancy. Sorry, the photo is not very clear. The...
Too bad there isn't an access hole from the top, about the center of gravity of the transmission, for a lift strap hoist or something. I could be tempted to make one with a grinder cut wheel and form a plate to cover the hole after it's re-assembled. I'm glad the top of the tranny is open on...
I wouldn't buy a used tranny that has had motor oil in it, only one with ATF. My mechanic who had Allison certificates, says the frictions and steels act differently and while oil may work, oil reacts with the friction material negatively....so I trust him.
You probably have (only) one...
