Here is a statement from gringletaube, but none of the links work on the thread: There are many experts on this subject here. You can improve the handling with the larger tires. "Radials should run parallel (zero toe-in) and caster angle be at least +4º."

There are a lot of threads on the subject, so I won't repeat them here. I highly recommend that you make the modification with that much weight and size of tire.

I went to 1/2" hex head bolts there, myself. The frame connection plates for the my bed have 1/2" thick plate so I have room for the heads.

I've struggled with one before, different model. I think I put a couple of long bolts in, with jam nuts, to get some leverage.

Have you seen the Kia military truck line? Google it and look at the images. They have copies of both the deuce and the 5 tons with modern engines and drives, but nearly identical...and the Jeep, check them out.
