Here is the back side of m1101 surge brake coming together. I'm ordering parts to replace the lunette ring with adjustable 2 5/16"ball. Cutting the ring off is next. Fun!
Here is an overview of the parts of my 1101 surge brake. My camera has given up and I'm learning how to use this IPad. After I get some paint, there will be some while assemblling.
I may use mine on an M105 frame/axle...not sure yet....more likely will be extending the tongue and using this one with the hitch modified for my 2 5/16" ball (can change to lunette ring). While I trust "free backing" in general, I have not studied it to understand it's workings. I want to...
Yes, I see what you are saying....it's tight but there is a place that a pin would fit and prevent the arm from going back. While I'm working on mine, I'm going to add the holes for a 1/2" thru pin. I'm trying to take some pictures but having battery issues.
Yep...."free backing" the literature says.
The shock inside would be in the way to prevent simply drilling a hole but if the front pin were changed for a longer bolt, there could be an exterior block made that would keep the shaft from going into the housing.
I got off lucky. While I had...
I have my 1101 actuator almost entirely apart and will take pictures of the inside tomorrow. I didn't realize the shock was so small....yep one there. I'm having a hard time seeing what prevents it from seizing up when backing or even a place to put a bolt that locks it out.
NormB can you...
I'm taking apart the brake MC and lunette ring on my M1101 and will make an attempt to photograph it if anyone wants to see the inside. If that is already done, please give a reference. Not sure why, but I was expecting a shock absorber. I see there are springs but until the forged, lunette...
I got some from a one ton Ford van, 8 lug, 16" (used them as spare for the dump trailer not on a HMMWV). They are not as wide as the HMMWV wheels, which I have used on Dexter axles (mod to spring mounts).
I've been wondering about using a spring in conjunction with the shock so that it doesn't apply until there is enough force to overcome the spring. Like for backing with a light load.
While looking for alternatives for the OEM shock, I find there are some mini-bike types with coil over that...
I agree they need something to keep the crud out. I have a new set for my truck too. Might find a poly tube the right size to slip on tight and then stick a spot of silicone in the other end and let it dry.
Since I haven't looked, does the wrench have to be bent that way? I like the closed...
That may be the problem. I thought the above pics are the 105.
I have the bolster wheels on my M1061. In prior calculations, while dualing the 105 axle up (picture), it's width is 1.5" wider than the legal limit. The bolster wheels and tires fell within the 8'6 limit. I don't know about...
His pictures of the back of the trailer show that the wheel wells line up perfectly on the 105 he has...but note I made the assumption they were bolster wheels, since I saw what I thought were HMMWV tires. I'm getting a couple to go with my M105 frame/axle that I'll put the geithner shelter...
Find one from an M1101/1102 if you can use the pintle or go to e-trailer (estimate about $450).
Edit start here and they are much cheaper than I was thinking

Or put a proper surge brake on it and connect to the hydraulic brakes.
That is a nice trailer and apparently you have bolster wheels and hummer tires to make it lower. Personally with the mods you have done + perhaps remove a few springs and put on shocks/ and brakes, I would keep it not...
I began putting the M35A3 together. It's a project I have put off, but have to sell something and my M931A2 hasn't sold, so the A3 gets my attention. Since I have troop seats and a cover, I started there and then went to tires. My cover is getting more damage off than it would on, so it gets...
Welcome from Indiana. I like the A3 and have a 97. Did you go to 395's? Very nice looking truck, can you add a few pictures?
Note the bigger tires put a little more stress on the Allison which has a reputation for burning the fourth and reverse clutch out. Should you have an opportunity to...
