    In tank pump failure, pics

Yuck. This is what I was greeted with when I pulled my pump this evening. I had no idea the screen and shims and fallen off, besides reading about the possibility in this thread. Anybody else have this brown crud? At first I thought it was rust but its non-magnetic. Could it be cosmoline...

    Tanks from the past

Here's some pics on their way to war. My father-in-law had these scanned from old slides, they're from Fleetwood, PA.

    Electrical Help Please

My 93' GMC does something like that when the battery terminal ends work their way loose. It actually broke me down at a gas station in Sherman, ME (225 miles from home) after leaving Baxter State Park. A local came over and knew exactly what the problem was, I bought the guy a 12 pack of beer.

    First attempt at replacing metal

Thanks, Maddawg. It took me a long while to tool up to get this far. I had made a long term plan for my wife's MGB restore: First purchase an air compressor, then the air tools, and finally a welder. Somewhere along the line I got distracted and bought a deuce--that set me back at least a year!

    First attempt at replacing metal

Looked to me the fender skin was 18 gauge, but the structure material was 16 gauge. I used 18 gauge scrap metal from an old desk my Mom had me haul out of her basement last year. I figured it would come in handy when I started to toy with welding. I couldn't find 18 gauge at Tractor Supply...

    First attempt at replacing metal

Here's the results after sanding down the lightweight body filler and a couple coats of primer. Looks a lot better then a rust hole! Thanks Z, I think I've seen those but didn't make the welding connection. Another tool to add to the shopping list! One new tool I tried on this job, besides...

    LDT-465 in a daily driver?

Too bad we couldn't just scale one down to the size of a 4.0 in a Jeep TJ. That would be sweet.

    Ft. Drum - Kevin

Having picked up two trailers there I hear what you guys are saying, but once you get past the shock factor I think you'll find that's his personality and you don't need to take it personally. I found showing up with my wife disarmed him a bit. My wife picked up on his accent he was from the...

    M109A3 with no Turbo?

Incidentally, while we're on the subject, I thought I'd mention the early LD-465 engines without turbo had rear exhaust. The frame on mine has at least one of the brackets and it looked like something had been bolted there.

    M109A3 with no Turbo?

Welcome to SS. Yes, its possible to have an M109A3 without a turbo. My Kaiser Jeep presumably did not have one when it rolled out of the factory new in 1966, but got one during a rebuild in 1985. The turbos were added later to clean the air/exhaust. Look for small rebuild or overhaul tags...

    First attempt at replacing metal

Thanks nk14zip, I hope to get it to the Maine rally! Dave - I saw a tank restoration TV show where they took two bombed out Shermans and welded them together in a similar fashion. Also saw an episode of Trucks where they took a C-10 longbed, cut it up, and made it a shortbed. Enough time...

    First attempt at replacing metal

Thanks and yeah, I already slabbed it with filler, I plan to sand it down and prime the entire fender this weekend. The perspective I'm taking on the rust is its practice: "Honey, I need to go practice some more on the deuce so I can do a really good job on your car..." Well, at...

    First attempt at replacing metal

Yeah, I agree. Initially I thought I could get away with just the one large patch but then had trouble welding it in on those sides due to the pitted metal or hidden rust, so i had to cut it back some more and make more patches.

    First attempt at replacing metal

Finally took the plunge and got a mig welder two weeks ago, after playing around a little bit this was my first attempt at patching a rust hole. The project was the driver's side fender. Of course everything got a bit more complicated once you got into cutting the metal. I originally thought...

    M-109A3 buying questions

Roofs will vary, you should climb onto the top of the box and inspect the seams where the sheet metal panels are riveted together. Depending upon the leaks or rust damage, you're probably going to be using the same roof sealants as a RV owner would use, or replacing the sheet metal (welding or...

Met another Vietnam chopper pilot today

This thread made me think of a daughter of a KIA pilot I had worked and been friends with years ago. She had been born while her dad was in Vietnam and was barely a month old when he was killed. She had a real hard time with it when she turned 27, because that meant she had outlived her...

    the offical biodiesel reactor post

Yeah, Girlmark put on a very good 2 day hands on class. I think a lot of SS members would get a kick out of her. When I met her she was driving across the country giving classes from a GMC Cargo Van (6.x diesel) towing her Appleseed reactor behind her and making biodiesel as she went. This...

    Is this radiator salvageable?

Thank you gentlemen. I'm exploring replacement options but still hope to fab a fix for it eventually. I believe the core is good, my time and fab skills just aren't where I need them to be yet. That said we do have an old radiator shop in town, I'll bring it by on Monday for a look see...
