I have had the acdelco's for 8 months or so and not one has blown up, if your using a push button system i would recommend the acdelco's because they are self-regulating temperature, which means they cant swell up at the tips.

When my brother was working on our M1009 he dropped a wrench on the battery and crossed the terminals, it wrecked the battery but didn't explode, and fried the starter as well as some wires, not too bad, total damage was around 300 for a new starter, wiring and battery
Looking forward to seeing pics, some problems are the glow plugs and cold starting, but mine has started down to 3 degrees (the coldest i have tried). And the starter relay i would replace with the "Doghead Starter Relay" link is below...

If your losing coolant try replacing you radiator cap, its less than $5 at O'reilly Auto Parts, mine was letting the pressure out and therefore losing coolant after replacing it the problem was solved
