Ok guys, back to the drawing board.
Found another platform (c8000 cabover truck) with the 8.3 already in it, and air brakes. I'll put my 13 speed and a military tcase behind it. Military 5 ton Cap.
Axles will be 5 ton units (single screw rear), converted to S-cam brakes (already have the...
In reviewing how much time is available....
I think now that my play will be as follows:
Reutilize my existing truck.
Brakes:
Juice brakes. Still air over hydraulic, split the circuit.
Option 1: Maybe use only air - maybe use the stock M/C for the front, and then put an additional airpack...
The other issue I've heard about taking off in second is that you'll shear the woodruff keys on the 2nd gear cluster (not sure if that's countershaft or mainshaft). Not sure if that's an issue or not but it's what I was told long ago.
I was told that if you don't ease the clutch in 2nd, you...
Hey guys,
Thanks again for the thoughts. If I stick with the deuce, I have enough spare shafts to make that not a concern (the easiest thing I could break would be an axle shaft!).
I see two options:
1. Put 8.3 and etc into the deuce body. Relocate xfer case, split braking circuit, maybe...
Interesting - I wasn't sure if the airshift was only on the 920/930 series - guess so. Thanks for the heads up.
I'll learn more about what the current options are tonight, and go from there.
That said, I am pretty confident that the 8.3, this 13 speed tranny I have, and 5 ton mil axles are...
I've been told it's easy to roll the windows down, lay a piece of lumber (I'd nail 2 2x4's together into a 4x4) across the tops of the windowsill, and then use a ratchetstrap or a small hand winch off that.
On install, use long 3/8" bolts as temporary pilot studs to guide the tranny into place.

Travis and TM america - Thanks so much for your insight and feedback. I like the cummins motors and I'm pretty enthusiastic about the project.
I think I've found my next project, and the base is 5 ton. As much as I like the deuce platform, there's a lot more preferences for the 5 ton platform...
Title says it all. The 3208T deuce has been fun but I'm looking to build a truck with more power. The hills in Colorado are sizeable enough to make 500-600 ft lbs in this truck seem like a mouse motor. My truck would be a screaming flatland truck but unfortunately I've learned (the hard way)...
As has been stated, the horn solenoid is always fed 24v, and you just need to ground it to make the horn sound. That ground connection is completed by the button in the steering wheel, and is conveyed by the wire running through the steering tube.
I redid my steering with a new box, and I put...
Thanks for the note. I'm very torn on what to do, but I'm glad to hear I'm not overlooking something obvious.
Anyone need a 3208 to repower a stock deuce? I know it will fit, and that the stock 5 speed will work behind it. I make you good price! :)
Hey guys,
A little late to the party. I have a 3208NA (converted to turbo) on a deuce with a Spicer 6855 (.695 O/D speed). The power is actually pretty great. I am more pyro-limited than anything, even going up I-70hills at 10,000 feet here in Colorado at a steady 45-50MPH on an unloaded...
Gerhard (Gerhardt? Perdóname, he olvidado la ortografía),
If there were a Nobel Prize for Assistiveness, you would be first and foremost in the running. Thank you so much for taking these measurements, and putting together such a great picture, to boot!!!!
Regarding the availability of...
Hi Gang,
I am in need of a quick measurement from a stock deuce (at least, one with stock steering):
- From
the center of the sector shaft (where the pitman bolts onto the steering box):
- To
the center of the spring eye, as found on the front of the driver's side.
Hey, if you already...
A friend of mine uses a come-a-long and a 2x4 across the (closed) doors to pull deuce transmissions.
If you want help r+r'ing the tranny once it's out of the vehicle, I'm in Boulder with tools aplenty (including press), and I'd be happy to help over some weekend (before skiseason, please. :))...
I have a hard time believing that what you're proposing would be any cheaper or easier than just finding a good, used LDS and swapping it in. You're essentially going to require everything from a good, used LDS anyway.
Yep, these babies were fine until they finally died. And, I run a solargizer on each one.
Even though just one battery was DOA, I have two new Interstate blems en route for $70 each - cheap insurance on that second battery. I figure (as you say) that since failure can be so sudden, I may as...
The engine I have for my repower also has a 12v starter. It runs just fine, and twice as quick. :)
I would highly advise not converting to 24v. Not only will you need to replace all of the components with 12v equivalents, but the amperage will suddenly double, meaning your wiring will also be...
By the way, the fore battery had a solid 12.5V or so, and the aft battery read 10.00 after being on the charger. I figured, hey, maybe it was really low before (and it was, indeed). As soon as tried to put any load on the system, system voltage dropped to almost nil.
I just about beat myself up trying to figure out why I couldn't start the truck today, after being on the battery charger for the past few days.
Checked the battery water, and yep, down to the top of the plates on the aft battery. :?
Off to get some distilled water.
