I'm leaving for lunch now, but somebody please post a screenshot of the -10 Operator's Manual where it deals with engaging the front axle, so we can get the official word instead of a bunch of folks's interpretations of the TM. (Even though most of them are mostly correct.)
Your best bet is to do google image searches for things like "Multifuel" and "LDT 465" or "M35A2 engine" and to also poke around here for pictures of folks's motors in their trucks and do a visual comparison to see which looks most like your engine. Chances are it's just a good ole LDT-465-1C/D....

The only reason to float the gears in a deuce and a half is if you have a transmission with badly worn synchromesh. Even then it is likely better to double-clutch rather than just float.
My truck has a pretty close to brand new transmission in it, and it sure is picky about going into second gear. I usually have to slip the clutch a little bit a couple of times before it will go into gear. If I'm planning to start in second, I slip it in to gear right before coming to a stop...
