Right on JC! Did you get funny looks when pulling the deuce on a trailer with a truck half the size of the deuce? At a fuel stop, fella asked me if I didn't have it backwards, loaded the deuce by mistake to pull the Super Duty!
Nice to know that I am not the only crazy redneck on this forum :p
I have to go along with Rattlehead; I am confused.
It appears to me that as the clutch engages nearer to the top with less "bite" then this would be an indication of wear. I have driven many different vehicles, new and old, and the newer the clutch, the more "bite" or less travel from bottom...
Of course you could always pick one up with a 5ton trailer and pull it with a F350, :freaked: . right Joe?
(inside joke, I bought a truck from Joe in NJ and picked it up with the above referenced rig, don't think Joe believed it would get back to GA. I can still see him shaking his head as we...
Best of luck on the change out. I just finished reading a thread about the change out in this forum (I was looking at bidding on a sprag truck), lot of good info.
Wonder if Ironhorse would update us about the use of syn. oils: type, any particular characteristics, etc.
I have stayed with the...
Joe is correct about the best source; many old tractors use GL1 in their trans.
Hey Richard, I am curious, do you have any conerns about the additives having a negative effect on the bronze in the gearbox? I would like to use a syn. oil if it won't hurt the bronze parts.
Think you may have a problem. You are to use GL1 in the tranny which is basically pure mineral oil. Anything else has additives which can damage the gears..
Here is a link to my source for fluids, etc: http://hometown.aol.com/spuprr/upkeep.html
How long have you had the 90wt. in the trans?
You learn something everyday. What type of Detroit did you have?
I am familiar with the oil seal problem but was also taught to use the emergency shutdown if it reversed as well.
I looked at the deuce and have learned that the shut down is a restriction of fuel.....but I am pretty sure our...
Really nice setup..
Also like your tires....what kind? price? where did you buy 'em?
Main reasons I am so interested is that I need some mud tires for my working deuce and I only live about 85 miles north of Atlanta....
Thanks
Robb
That is interesting. I need to look at the shut down plate on the deuce. Some old detroits had two shut down knobs; one was labeled "emergency" which was used when the engine reversed....the standard plate would not work because it would not overcome the force of the exhaust blowing back thru...
........ :banghead: Unless you own a ship;
Should be interesting to see what it brings. I am going to put it on my watchlist for fun.

I would agree that the engine ran in reverse. I had it happen on an old Detroit. :freaked: I would suggest you change the oil because of the blowback of soot from the exhaust. After that it ran fine.....
How did you shut it down? We had to throw a coat over the exhaust to stop the "intake".
I have an original M16 canvas case if you are interested. Don't know if these were routinely seen in a deuce.... I would always want my weapon free and ready! :boxer:
Thanks Kenny. Allows me to make a more informed decision...
By the way, I e-mailed the seller with some questions about the truck and was confused by his response...just so I don't misquote, below is a copy of the response:
Hello,
The 5 ton trucks have an air shift for the front axle...
Gave me alot to think about and alot of info [^]
Just what I was lookin for........ Don't know that much about the difference in the 5 tonners: 813 v. 543, so I obviously need to do more homework. Thanks again.....this forum is great!
