the 900 series 5 tons had the cummins 6CTA 8.3L motors, not the NTCs. regardless, i would take this motor over the NTC anyday - much easier to get better power out of and much easier on fuel.
also, i think the trans in the 5T is a 5 spd auto.
out of the 2, i'd take the 5T hands down.
actually, that looks like somewhere out by Sarno Extension, or maybe the Grid?
i haven't been there in a looonng time...
and, for those of you that don't know, there is no other mud as sticky as black FL goop.
boy, that'd be a big tank. i was only planning on running a 10gal resevoir in the corner of the bed. actually, i didn't ask about minimum resevoir size. i think it depends on gpm of the system.
i'll go ask...
ok, so the hydraulics expert has gotten back with me and verified some really good information.
first, based on gringeltaube's destructive testing and winch calculations, i gave minimum (conservative) criteria as this:
minimum line pull performance of 20,000 1st layer / 10,000 5th layer...
yes, that's what they were. they were a Kalmar make. we could only move them around w/ HETS. i used to have some pretty cool recovery pics - we had to right one after the DA driver flopped it on it's side while moving a 40'-er around too fast off road. we just used 2 HEMMT wreckers to right it...
i haven't done the math, but here's everything you need to do it:
speed is not dependant upon load, only engine speed
hi-gear on the winch PTO is 1.5 the engine speed (1000rpm engine = 1500rpm PTO shaft)
lo-gear is 2/3rd's the engine speed (1000 = 667 shaft)
worm reduction is 23(?) to...
$2200 + core ($800 and up)
dunno, i will be looking for a #2 to put behind my cummins, but #3 sounds about right for the MF. i think this is something that you can find out on a search here - i have never looked.
it's going to be a good bit longer than the spicer, i believe - i need to measure again.
ratios:
Spicer 3053
1st: 5.90
2nd: 3.10
3rd: 1.70
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.85
FSO-6406
1st: 7.05
2nd: 4.13
3rd: 2.52
4th: 1.59
5th: 1.00
6th: 0.78
in my truck, i think the FSO would be ideal w/ the 16.00s -...
we loaded a bunch in '02 from HAAF, supporting our sister Co's deployment to Africa. i ran the night shift, which, for whatever reasons was about 4 times as busy as the day shift.
anyway, at one point we had 5 C5s and 3 C17s on the ground staged to be loaded. that was a sight..... and a busy...
i know the posts following these pics are very derogatory, but it looks functional as hel to me. i'd add lockers and hydro steering, but looks like a very capable ranch / recovery truck.
seems as though anytime someone chops up a truck folks get there panties wadded up because it's...
winches are usually rated by maximum line pull, which if it is a variable pull type winch, would be the first layer (on the drum) of line. constant pull winches (like the M88A2 main winch) are a different animal.
anyway, so an electric winch like a Warn or (i'm assuming) a hydraulic like the...
i measured about 25" from engine adapter face to trans output flange. the 3053 case itself is only about 16.5" long...
i looked at an RSO-6406A this morning - it's at about 24" long w/out the clutch housing, which is about 7" more. this may be the route i take when i put my 5.9 in. but i have...
i don't think you're going to find anything short enough to replace the 3053 series with more than 5 spds. and if you don't move the engine or transfer, i don't think you'll find anything, period.
if anyone has found a 6+ speed trans as short or shorter than the spicer, i'm all ears...
