A search for ether, gets you to the page. Easy enough to identify the part in question.
My M931 (not an A2) has the very same system.
The thing with 2 hoses is the thermal safety valve (mechanical thermostatic switch)
The data plate on the dash clearly explains to push the button in to charge the system and release the button to discharge the ether(charge).

That is your glowplug relay. Has nothing to do with the starter motor.
Please confirm, your enging does not turn over with the key in the start position, correct?
Or, are you saying it turns over, but does not start?

Billet aluminum brake, clutch and throttle pedals.
Re machining all SAE threads to Metric.
And finally, adding cooling fins to the cylinders and heads...
