Well, friends, this hasn't been the easiest decision for me, but I'm going to have to say goodbye to the M1009. I've had a blast working on her and have learned a ton. She was fun to drive, but the miltiary is PCSing me and my new posting isn't really going to allow me the time to work on her...
So, after a long, cold hard winter and burning up my plugs, I got some new ones. Ordered direct from indusadist. Pulled the old plugs which were all pretty blackened and rusted, but none were swollen. Installed the new ones without incident. (All Wellman 070s)
But nothing changed. I'm...
This topic has been addressed in several places, but I just had a recent experience I'd like to share. Mods feel free to move, sticky or delete as applicable. :D
If you have swollen glow plugs, there's a tool that makes their removal a lot easier than snapping them off, pulling the injectors...
So the weather here has been in the single digits to the 20s the past few days and the M1009 is having a time of it. Problem is, it's taking a good 3-4 tries to get it started (GPs need to be replaced, I'm sure), but they do fine when it's over 30, so, anyway...
Once the truck starts, the...
Okay, so I got under the truck to check out my popping steering. Steering box "looks" okay. But all my rubber is shot- ball-joints, shock/steering damper bushings, etc. is all literally crumbling. I can move them all with just a little hand pressure.
I've been planning a good refurb of...
I read this thread and it gave me some clues, but it didn't really address my problem.
When I'm making tight turns at low speed, such as parking, I'm getting a sort of clunk under my left foot as the steering wheel returns to center. It doesn't happen every time, but it started doing it a...
So the subzero midwestern temps finally bested my big steel beast. Glow plugs seem to be working, as the truck started all day yesterday and the day before with temps around 10*F. Admittedly it would take 2-4 tries of letting them cycle, cranking for 10 seconds and then letting the starter...
Did a search for this and didn't come up with anything. I know most folks are using Wellman 070s or AC60s. Was surfing around and came across these:
Glow Plug - Chevy 6.2L Military CUCV
Marketing sounds great, but some firsthand reports would be great if anyone has used these.
Loss of power and shuddering- it was the U-joint!
So after a week of lovely in-town driving, I took the M1009 out on the freeway and the evil shuddering came back. It does fine accelerating and shifting in town, and is good for about 15-20 minutes on the freeway, but after that it gets weird...
So, just when I got the IP replaced and was enjoying the M1009 immensely, something else had to get weird, right?
I searched this and read a good 30 threads and saw similar things, but nothing just like what I'm experiencing. So, here's the deal:
The truck is driving like a tank. 1st gear...
So tonight I was trying to install a cigarette lighter, and rushed it after I didn't get a reply to my query on here. I checked all of the supposedly available 12v openings on the fuse box with the truck running, and none of them had any power. Then I tried running the lighter from the v-meter...
So, I finally got the M1009 "legal". I've been fine driving on base, but get a bit nervous out in town. Have had the local PD, Sheriff and HP all follow me, pass and wave/salute, but didn't want an incident in the event of an accident.
Got license plates today and then had to figure out how...
So my buddy who helped me with the IP install has a M1008 he's stripped down. Basically he's just using the body. He put in a 350 gasser, going to refinish in blue, etc. Got it out of a salvage yard where the windows were broken out and rained in, etc. So he has a GP relay and a GP controller...
So, I'm trying to plan ahead for when I get my tax refund (I have 3 kids, so I get a nice one :-D.) The wife and I agreed to dump about a grand into the truck to keep it ship shape. I can always do more, and have budgeted about $200/mo in maintenance costs, since i don't have a loan payment...
So, I spent a good 4-5 hours today working on the M1009. It's been parked since around April, due to a bad Injector Pump and my lack of time or money to fix it. Long story short, I got an IP off a guy on Craigslist, got the right tools for the job, and swapped pumps. After just 2 or 3 turns...
I'm not exactly an expert on these, but seriously? This had me laughing pretty hard.

Kansas City Craigslist has this for $125, out of a '93 6.2L Diesel Chevy:

My M1009 is dead in the water due to IP issues. (I'm woefully inexperienced with IP swaps). Would love to get my truck up and running for winter. Searched all over the internet and usually can find what I'm...
So, the M1009 has been parked dead in the driveway all summer due to a shot Injector Pump I can't get out. The simple fact is, I don't know enough about what i'm doing. If there's anybody in the area who can help me get it out so I can get it rebuilt, I would really appreciate the help. I...
So, I need some advice, and maybe some hands-on assistance. The IP on my 1009 is non-functioning for the time being. Here's the situation:
Had leaking seals on the the throttle shaft. Got the parts and replaced them. No problem there.
Problem is:
1. Had a foreign object (small gasket?)...
So, having tracked down a leak to the throttle shaft seals on the the injector pump, and having acquired the parts and a quick lesson from the guy at the Stanadyne shop, I undertook a fairly ambitious repair for a relative newb. Here's the story:
-Removed the air cleaner (1 minute)
-Removed...
