    GM turbo or Cummins? Again!

Have you thought about going with a Banks Sidewinder setup instead? Just another option.

Won't stop cranking, blown fuses, melted wires, lots of smoke... scratching head.

Thanks for your input guys. I will get that starter pulled the next chance I get. Everything keeps pointing back to the solenoid. It was just confusing the heck out of me since I had so many other, seemingly unrelated issues at the same time. Rickf, to answer your question, yes. The...

Won't stop cranking, blown fuses, melted wires, lots of smoke... scratching head.

I had a complicated problem with my M1008 a while back that I'm just now getting around to looking into. Haven't had any luck in the TM's or Forum. Background: the starter relay has been removed and a push-button switch installed in its place, this has worked flawlessly for 2+ years. The GP...

To Girdle, or Not To Girdle...? This is the question.

Looking for some wisdom and insight here on my upcoming Banks Sidewinder install in the M1008. I've read here on SS that it is recommended to install a Stud Girdle Kit to the bottom end of the motor when adding a turbo to these motors, but have also read on other sites that they are not worth...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Alright! Finally all wrapped up. I have the correct AC Delco bolts, thread-loc'd with lock washers, torqued to 33 lb. ft. with the support bracket on and tight, and one shim in place. The first time I started it up, I don't think it has ever sounded that clean and smooth starting before, so...

Talk me into it (or out)1008

Not to toot my own horn here, my truck is just one of many examples and I learned literally everything about my truck and how to lift it from other SS members, but I do think that my build thread (link below in my signature) is a decent place to start for someone looking for more info on how to...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Ok, it's well known that I'm a little bit of a dummy at times. I thought I had the gear reduction starter and got worried when I discovered that I had the older style, curved support bracket but it turns out I have the Direct Drive starter, P/N 6346. I did a SEARCH (gasp!) to figure this out all...

Kinda got carried away..... M1028 rebuild

Ha! Love it. Why move the gut when you can just spend a few hundred bucks on moving the steering wheel?!? Sounds way easier than sit-ups. Awesome truck! Great work!

Man, you guys are awesome. Didn't even have to pretend to do a search then ask anyway :-P Love this community!

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Wow. Never thought about that. Excellent question, I have no idea. I'll have to compare pictures of the two brackets when I get under there. My starter is the smaller gear reduction also. When I put it all together everything seemed to fit fine but I'll have to verify that somehow. Thanks!

Talk me into it (or out)1008

You're definitely in the wrong place if you're looking for someone to talk you OUT of buying that truck. WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? I've had mine 3 years as a daily driver. Got mine with 32,000 miles on it, 2 years ago I went for the 4" lift and 37" HMMWV wheels and tires and I LOVE...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

True and correct. In one of my previous adventures down this road I noticed that the support bracket was missing a bolt. I figured out which bolt size and thread it needed and when I went to replace it, discovered why it was missing. The threads in the block were stripped. So, I got to go back...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Just ordered the stock GM bolts directly from AC Delco. Pack of 5 was about $15, plus another $15 for 2-day shipping. A little steep for a few bolts but I need to get this thing back on the road and if this stops the breakages, its worth it. This way I'll have 3 spare bolts that I hope I'll...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Thanks. Will do. I'll ask the dealer what torque spec should be too. I've also just been hand-tightening and I have been known to break a bolt or twenty by hand when tightening. I have also been using Loc-Tite every time because I assumed, like every other bolt on this truck, it would...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Ok great. I'll give them a shot. They certainly can't be any worse than what I've been dealing with. Apparently "Grade 8" doesn't mean the same thing in China as it does here. Pretty sure it translates directly to "cheap junk, guarantee you break most inconveniently causing much sorrow and...

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

Not yet, but I sure will be now. That is, of course assuming that the Heli-Coil isn't all messed up and I don't have to get into a really imaginative fix.

HELP - CUCV Breaking Starter Bolts Often

I've had a persistent and increasingly annoying problem with my CUCV snapping the Grade 8 Starter Bolts about every 2 months of daily driving. At first I think it was because the last shop that replaced my starter didn't use shims and it got loose somehow. I've had to replace the starter...

    M1008 Wheel/Tire upgrade

You cannot fit the 37" HMMWV tires on your stock wheels. The HMMWV tires are a 16.5" tire and are too wide for the stock CUCV wheel. You will need to get a different wheel, the stock HMMWV wheels just happen to bolt up to the M1008 axle (not the M1009 axle, 8 vs 6 bolts) and they're relatively...

    M1008 Wheel/Tire upgrade

Well, your acceleration certainly isn't helped with a larger tire. That's especially true if you leave the run-flat inserts in place. This is already a very heavy wheel/tire combo, but with the run-flats each wheel and tire weighs in at about 150 lbs. I only know this because when they were...

    M1008 Wheel/Tire upgrade

Oh, and yes, you need a minimum of 4" lift. Even then I had to do a little trimming to the front fenders. There is a way to avoid all trimming though, get a set of "Zero-Rates" from Offroad Design. They will give you an additional 1" lift in the front (which I really wish I had done, my front...
