    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

Probably didn't need a hoist and 4 hands for that head! I never had to fix one of these problems as it was considered depot level repair and the P19's were coming online and replacing the 4's.

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

Lol....use a hoist! But it isn't to terrible..... But .... I remember cylinder sleeves.... And some distant memory of them causing issues like yours.... But that is a distant memory, I need to review the T.O. .....

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

P4 held 1500 gallons of water if my memory serves me right.... About 60 secs worth.... Really doesn't matter after that! If you don't have the aircraft suppressed in 60..... Probably ain't going to happen! And yes, the most successful mechanics at working alone with p4 were not weaklings! 😝...

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

We always filled them with 30 at when warm and 10wt when cold, while water is not unusual in there, it does say that the primer pump may need help. Of course you only have to worry if you plan on filling it up from a body of water. 😜

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

That electric motor next to it is the primer pump, and it just draws the oil from the reservoir into that pump and spits it out on the ground just below it.

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

It has been a long time ago..... But... I remember the "hydraulic pump reservoir" that has the "white glob" in it has the primer reservoir. No big deal, as if I'm correct the primer pump will draw it into the "water system" anyway. The system uses the oil seal the primer pump to draw air from...

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

Not all the P-4's had the winterization kit... But a certain number of every type did, P-2s', P-2D's, P-4's.... for the northern climates. We just got very lucky, 100 degrees in Hounduras and we got a P-4 from War Readiness Material in Elmendorf AK

    Oshkosh P-4 Fire Crashtruck Preservation

My primary job in the Air Force was a 472X1A Special Purpose Vehicle/Firetruck Mechanic.... The P-4 is awesome! I served in Honduras where they were the only fire protection and we moved them about in the back of a C-130. P-19 are cool, P-2D are big and powerful, P-15's are huge and unweildy...

M923 MPG and Differential Oil Seal Leak

My 923A0 just round tripped from Knoxville to the GA rally at 7.5mpg which was a little lower than I normally see.... 8-8.5mpg's.... I got very excited on the drive home from Huntsville as it appeared that I got well over 10.... but the reality is... 8-8.5... of course mine will only top out...

    11.2 Miles Per Gallon in a M923A1?

Brutus my 923A0 routinely get 7.5-8 with my foot on the floor and holding it there, maxing out at 55-57 mph (I've seen 60 on a loooonnngggg downhill). However, 10-11 when driving on roads that force me to run in the 1800rpm range and 40-45mph. Additionally, mine too seems to drive better with...

best diesel engine to swap into early-model CJ5?

Deutz! good idea! I had forgotten those but have used several in Fire Fighting Skid units, very reliable, very easy to take care of.... I'm not sure about the availability of an automotive governor.... but very nice engines
