It's great to hear the chatter about radio communications! Last time I could attend, 3 yrs ago I think, we had very few hams but did some successful testing using VHF low band and VHF high (2 meters). We also did some comparisons to FRS and GMRS.
FRS and GMRS: portable handheld to portable only worked "down the road a ways". Line-of-sight goes away really quick with the pine trees. With an elevated antenna on one end there was improvement, maybe a mile but that was intermittent. FRS/GMRS works great within the convoy but forget about getting back into camp.
2 meters: Worked quite well using a short pole, 20 ft or so, on the camp end and mag mount on the distant vehicle. Ran some power, 50W each end. Well worth the effort.
VHF lowband, done with Green Radios! Had an antenna up about 25 ft at camp. PRC-77 to PRC-77 worked quite well. We were on 51 MHz. In camp I added an AM 4477 20W amp and that made a big improvement at the far end. We sent out a rover and were able to work quite well at 6 to 8 miles. Also played with SEM 25 and SEM 35.
Rule of thumb is that lower frequencies follow the terrain better, and there is some terrain out there in Durhamtown!
I was set up behind the MKT on the hill, but that was at the old location. I don't know the new location but a 30 ft tower would be great.
The BIG improvement this year seems to be the abundance of you guys who have made the effort to get your ham licenses!!! Congratulations!
With any luck I hope to be there this year. Three of us are planning to convoy down from the Knoxville area, and we are all hams. We look forward to joining in any way we can help.
Looking forward to the event!!
