This is an entertaining place to ask for the value of anything. First of all, you will be asking people who probably do not own a truck like yours ands if they own an A2 they are as jealous as school girls and just as snippy. Second of all, you always have to remember that anything you own is lowball junk and whatever junk they are trying to sell you is made of diamonds and gold. Sorta like gun show prices.

Good luck selling it. The only people I have ever spoken with from this board about buying anything over a hundred bucks can barely scrap togehter the cost of shipping, nevermind the cost of the actual item. Of course if they are selling it is worth 250% of retail.

My personal fav was a guy who wanted me to haul a couple of tons of his junk cross country in my deuce, then instead of drving to my house to pick it up he wanted me to drive it an addition 700 miles round trip to his place for a hundred bucks. A hundred bucks would pay for enough diesel to go a whopping 250 of those miles. 3200 miles, 4000 pounds, for a C note,,,,,,best ship rate ever. I had to say no.

Lonegunman, I have to ask also, if we are all a bunch of crooks why are you here hanging out with us?

I just don't understand why somebody would post condemning most (if not all) of the members other than to stir up trouble. If you have that kind of attitude toward the membership you should just leave.

If the truck is worth 13k I think you should buy it.

To address the question of what the truck is worth. as much as you can get for it. Or keep it for yourself.

Now,
Don't expect to get a dealer price on a GL flip. It's not going to happen from anyone on this board.

Right now on Ebay there is a truck for 22k. Does that mean it is worth that? No
It just means someone is asking that. So don't look at what people ask.

I wouldn't be too surprised if you don't get a lot of help flipping a truck from the guys here. They guys will help people with their own trucks, people who support eh hobby, not trying to make a few quick bucks off it them.

Idaho motor pool is also a DEALER. so like any other car DEALER they want to try to get everydime they can. theres an m35a3 listed on ebay for 22k but hes never going to get that for it. 2cents

I posted my personal experience. As far as the truck, if you find a decent A3 for something in the $6,000 to $6,500 range with no GL wait, no wait for forms, recovery, initial services or repairs you are doing pretty good in my book. The last 3116 engine I saw on GL went for more than an entire truck.

Sorry lonegunman, I do have friends and buddies on this board. I have met them.

I can attest to their will to go out of their way for me in a crappy situation. I cannot however, attest to yours.

Not everyone wants what you want. Not everyone is jealous of you, your location, or smug.

I am not a certified reality check specialist, and did not stay in a holiday inn express last night.

If everything on the truck was perfect and if the right sucker comes along, maybe. I know I wouldn't, especially with the way they are coming out of GL. Add to this several other reasons like the economy, reliability of the A3, registering....

M35a3 in a five ton

I was just wondering about changing the A3 powerplant from the duce into an older M54. I was wondering if it would be worth the effort. I'm thinking that there would be enough room for everything that needs to suport the Cat engine and auto trans. I think maybe adapting the output shaft flange to a five ton flange would be about the hardest thing to do. Anybody try that yet?

On another note, the goberment is dumping all A3's at the moment, almost all are gone, in a year prices will be up 20%. In my opinion.
There is m35a2's still on the GL site, in pretty good numbers. I 've been bidding & watching , the trend is down on the A3s. A beautiful winch truck in Wi sold for 5250 (the tan one) last week. Most are a little over 4k, unless you bid on the ones in lower Ga. Under 4k many times.

You will notice that LGM is in love with M35A3 and anyone who differs from his opinion is an idiot and doesn't know what they're talking about. I own an A2, been around A3's and am friends/work with mechanics who have worked on A3's since they first came into the service. Their response is always "you couldn't pay me to take one of those pieces of $hit". I think they would have more experiences with this truck than anyone on this board and will take their advice/lessons over anyone else's. Sorry to burst the bubble about these perfect trucks to anyone with a brain. Ok back to our reguarily scheduled programming.

To the OP- there are 3 tiers of pricing:

Wholesale- direct from GL price. Lowest, but buying involves the most risk and headaches. This will swing with the demand curve- high when the first trucks get sold, lower as more come out, higher as they dry up. A3's are in the low part of the curve now. A2's have passsed bottom and are starting to swing back upwards. 923 series 5tons are on the way down to the bottom.

Hobbyist/Flipper price. Higher than GL, but lower than a dealer price. Easier to buy than from GL, but with zero follow on or support after in most cases. Unless you know the person, you have no idea of his honesty or reputation. These prices follow the swing in wholesale prices.

And lastly dealer price. Dealer price will be higher, because dealers price according to market value to people who use them for utility, not hobbyists, so the price is based on comparable value on a similar civilian truck. Dealers can afford to sit on trucks for a few years, so when you have market lows like we do now they can ride it out. In addition dealers will provide after sale support.t. A dealer also has a vested interest in being honest about the trucks condition, because they have a professional reputation to protect.

So when Joe Construction Company needs 4 trucks for his company, he will go to a dealer, and pay dealer prices, for the ease of buying 4 trucks from 1 place where he knows he can get support after the sale and they will be honest about them. He isn't going to take the time to sit down and find 4 trucks from unkown individuals who don't have a professional reputation to worry about or any reason to be honest about the trucks condition.

If you want to make dealer profits- become a dealer.

I am always amused when people think they are gonna get rich in the surplus game because they see prices a dealer gets and assume they can do the same without any of the overhead, knowledge, facilities, support staff, marketing costs, effort or time invested in gaining a positive reputation in the industry and building a solid network of contacts and customers.

I guess some people just look at this forum different than I do (just a bunch of a**holes BSing about trucks). I've made a lot of friends here and received a bunch of help when I needed it.

If you want to have that attitude it's fine with me but don't expect much help when you run into a problem with your truck or broke down in the middle of nowhere and need help.2cents

I have been driving deuces (and other MV's) since 1974....starting with the N/A multi-fuel and then the A2's.

I was never in a unit that had the A3's but I am not a fan of them for several reasons.

Automatic transmission....try push starting it out in the boonies when there is no vehicle to slave it off with...on level ground you can pull/push start an A2 with a Yugo, if the engine has fuel and air and turns over twice it will crank.....you can then drive it home with dead batteries/no alternator etc.

CTIS....a good idea in theory but prone to malfunction (designed by an idiot, built by morons and sold to the gov through lobbyists that were probably Transportation Officers at one time). Most people that buy them will end up disconnecting them like a lot of the units they served in.

That CAT engine......they are not much more powerful than the multi-fuel and when they break you better take some KY Jelly to the dealer with you......you are going to need it. An A2 with the fuel turned up and larger tires will pass an A3 like it is backing up.

The creature comforts are nice (electric wipers, good heaters and power steering)....all of these can be added to an A2....just add money.

The A3 was an attempt to upgrade the fleet and to have trucks that would keep up with the newer vehicles.....IMHO it was an abject and costly failure......the contractor that did the upgrades prob laughed all the way to the bank.

As for making money flipping MV's I have made some and I have lost some.....at one time I was buying good running deuces for a grand each and flipping them for a few hundred buck profit....the price has increased and the market has been saturated to the point that I will no longer tie up my money in them.

I have made some money on the larger trucks but for now I am on the wagon for whole vehicles.

You could not run fast enough to give me an A3 but that is my personal opinion.....your milage and perfomance will vary.

I wish I had bought an A3 at $12 k, I would have been money ahead of where I am now restoring the A2. I do not fear the A3 auto trans : the A2 has never, ever failed to start so I don't even imagine having to push start a deuce.

All the different vehicles have their perks and their problems. There are no exceptions. I don't find there to be any significant problem with the A3. I think it's a cool truck, so much so, that I bought one and haven't picked it up yet.

I like the perks, don't like the leaky CTIS, love the heaters, and like the fact that it is newer and has fewer miles.

I like the A2 as well and will probably buy it next year when I can get some cash together, as well as a place to park all this OD green stuff. And somewhere in there is a M37, I hope. It has it's perks and problems too, but that's what I love about all this stuff. It's the diversity of it all.

edit: Forgot to mention, I love the CTIS when it is fully functional. Cool stuff, and a real conversational piece for the family, neighbors and friends. I've already put that one to the test. I will have to work on mine, but I don't mind. I know I'll have all the help I need right here from all these fine fella's.
