Yep, I had the bracket. When the cone broke on the first one the starter jammed burned out and melted the wires. Things that made it worse was for some of this I was gone overseas and my dad had to deal with it. The 24v system is really a poorly designed system that GM threw together for the...
I went through 3 24V starters that the two that the nose cups cracked and then had other basic electrical problems. Kinda got fed up with dealing with the 24V starters after all of those problems. The conversion was simple and easy. The longest part was swaping the starter. Now I don't worry...
Just do the 12V conversion. Not hard and you have already bought the only thing you needed to buy to convert to 12V.
Oh and you will toast the 12V if you try to run it with 24V.
I know on our fire company's M1028 the only thing that was lost off of the tow hooks was one of the mounting holes on each one. A quick cut with a 3 inch cut off wheel and they still had the two main support bolts Which are fairly heavy duty. Grade 8 if I remember right and a good size. It was a...
I had to replace 1 optima 1 year ago after it was in the truck for 8 years. I also had electrical problems where it kept being killed. They were both probably killed well over 100 times while I was gone. I put an auto charger in the truck so I could shoreline it. The other one still is good, and...
I used to have a 2000w inverter on there as well when my truck was 24v. I changed the rear block to 12V and hooked the inverter to that. The engine needs to be running to use it or the battery dies quickly.
I am putting an a/c compressor for on board air in mine right now, but I have already converted my M1009 to 12 volts. So I am using the driver side alternator spot to put in a york a/c compressor.
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: CUCV pintle hitch
These trucks can tow alot more than what the -10 states, BUT the -10 is the rating on the bumper with the pintle attached to it. The M1009 pintle rating mounted to the bumper is 1200lbs, with a tongue weight of 120lbs. If you put a class III hitch on the...
The cheap flasher unit is $3 the good one is $10 or $12. The cheap ones are real junk but if you just want to trouble shoot you can swap the 4way flasher unit with the turn signal one. I have swapped both of mine to the heavy duty one.
RE: Re: RE: CUCV pintle hitch
Part of it is the rating of the axel, gear difference, the suspension difference and the bumper is also lighter. M1009's have a 1/2 to 3/4 ton axles, where the M1008's have 1 to 1 1/4 ton axles. The M 1009 has a 1 inch square tube reinforcement isn't as heavy as...
So far as long as my schedule doesn't get changed too much I should be able to make it if not for all of the days I can make one of them. I will be bringing my M1009
remove the cover screws and then it is 3 bolts, the rest is just removing the wires. It is a resistor block. The bolts sometimes need some lube. If not you will strip out the nut rivets.
These are not gas engines that were converted by GM to be diesels. These engines were designed as diesels from the ground up. I would definately hold off.
I would put a heavy duty flasher unit in your truck, they are 10-12 dollars instead of the 2-3 for a regular one fixed my trailer signal light issues. Mine had acted a bit screwy.
swede can you post a pic of your conversion, I will do the same for you but it will take me a couple days since I will be out of state moving my sister till the end of the week.
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: cruising speed
I thought the rust helped the airflow in the lower part of my truck. Kinda like air vents or a swiss cheese effect.
That and the lack of metal is reducing the weight of the truck. :D
