Red oak works fine. Cut to length, countersink for the rivet heads on the frame. We used to paint 4 good coats of used motor oil mixed 50% with diesel fuel. Keeps the wood from rotting, and seems to keep the frame rails from rusting on top. We used this under the beds of dump trucks, flats, etc.
I have the same thing happen to me with the old vets. We went to the McIntosh Native American reserve Pow Wow last week. My wife paints faces, I show off my truck. A lot of the N.A. men are vets, and I had one take it around the field for a spin with 10 vets in the back. One told me his last...
Leave the deuce axles intact and run a drive shaft back. You would need a center support brg at the pintle hook point, but it would work.
18 wheel drive!
Do yourself a favor and get the thing running before anything else. You can sink a lot of bucks into an old one like this, especially if it has been setting up for years.

The 4 would just be an easier swap, because of the length. The 4-71, at 284 inches, makes the same HP as a 568 inch 4 stroke. The 4 strokes generally have more torque. A 4-71 would give a higher top speed, I seem to remember them turning close to 3000 rpm in the boats.
Now, if they just didn't...

Get a transmission cooler from a junkyard and use it in the tank. That will give you the heat transfer you need, and should be cheap enough. Some trucks have a nice long unit that would drop right in.
I am going to wash my bio, what you are seeing is the caustic attacking the brass and...
Your problem is your location. Colorado is beautiful, but can be remote. Tires around Ga. and the carolinas are inexpensive, Texas as well.
Since tires are expensive in your area, why don't you flip the rear hubs and single out? At least you need 4 tires less that way.
Your truck will also...
I drove an M-108 that had been repowered. It was a mid '50's truck that had one of the early multifuels in it. I can't remember which engine, I was only 16 or 17 at the time. Ran nicely, and the boom was really nice. It was in a military salvage yard in DeFuniak Springs fla. in the early 80's...
I guess it depends how badly you want one as to what it's worth. I paid 3K$ for mine and drove it home. I recently turned down an offer of 5K$ for it. I would pay no more than $600 for a parts truck. I would consider $2500 a decent price for a runner, one that maybe needed paint, seats covered...
