I would return it to Surplus City. It is not a correct top. If the side angles are missing, there is a strong likelihood that there are other errors. You are correct in surmising that heat will not help when attempting to install this top.
Be sure to point out the fabrication errors when...
Just make one. Any decent fabrication shop will be able to do it (it is only 3/16th mild steel). Someone in your area must have a winch truck they can use as a pattern.
I'm just about to the point that I am going to buy some one piece bumpers and start making split bumpers to sell. I just know...
Midwest Military or New Life Canvas.
New Life Canvas would be my recommendation; nothing wrong with Midwest Military, but Mona at New Life is absolutely fanatical about perfection and will provide an exquisite reproduction top.
Just my experience and 2 cents worth.
Sewn in metal "L" angles are the correct side attachments over the doors. There is an error in the new top you got from Surplus City. That is not a correct reproduction.
The split bumpers can be made from the solid one piece bumper if you get tired of searching. One of the front bumpers on my truck is original and one is made from a solid one piece bumper. I would be willing to bet that you couldn't tell which is which after examining the truck.
Finding the...
BTW, if you do this mod, be sure you have the spacer plates that are installed under the front and rear springs on the left hand side. You will probably need longer U-bolts for the left side springs.
These spacers will offset the added weight of the tire and carrier and keep your truck level...
ARVN's were rough on everything as a general rule.
Remember, these trucks were mostly driven by 17, 18 & 19 year old kids back in the day. They usually weren't used to power steering either back then. So there is that. Also, I've noticed that the older I get the harder the truck is to steer at...
Welcome to the site, Jim!
These trucks are fun and easy to restore (but not necessarily cheap; you'll find that shipping costs are the deal killers).
Patience is a most valuable virtue with these trucks. There is lots of help on this site and you will develop a network of sources and vendors...
Just for informational purposes, my top came from Midwest Military. It was made by the J.J. Johnson Co. who is the original manufacturer for these canvas tops. They are still making them. Mine has always fit very well.
New Life Canvas (Mona Roth) makes absolutely the best reproduction canvas...
Midwest Military made a bunch a few years ago and sold out of them and never made any more and didn't remove them from the catalog. I've been pestering John for years about them (with no success so far in getting another batch built).
I could make one too, if I had a sample to work from. That's...
Do it on a hot day. Drape it over the cab for a couple of hours until it is nice and hot; pliable and stretchy.
It will probably still be tight, but it will go on much easier. In fact, it will still be tight for the half dozen or more times it comes off or goes on, but it will get easier each...
There are many different versions. I'm still hunting for the 2 piece fording bracket that is used on the forward mounting position. If you know of one, I'm interested.
I learned along time ago that the search for the "one correct" whatever on these trucks is a fool's errand. Things changed...
It has been in the MV of the Month a couple of times, but only as "filler" to get the minimum number of vehicles so they can have a vote.
There doesn't seem to be much love for old M37s in that forum.
Thanks for the kind words about the truck! It takes me a while to get anything accomplished, but eventually I get there.
Regarding the "next option project", I'm going to try to finish up all the others I've started and "put on the back burner".
I need to finish, in no particular order:
100...
There recently seemed to be some interest over on the CUCV thread about dual wheels. I just finished a long delayed dual wheel project for the M37 / M42 that I thought there might be some interest in.
A long time ago (decades actually; yeah, I'm old) I started thinking about a dual wheel...
