    Insurance ???????

WHAT?!?!?!? You mean that a 1-ton pickup isn't rated for a cargo capacity of PRECISELY 2000 pounds? And a half ton isn't rated for EXACTLY 1000 pounds? And something like a "quarter ton" Colorado or Ranger actually may have a higher actual load capacity than the awful abortion of a truck known...

Ratings for shackles and pintle hook? how to open the hook? And starter ?s

Working load usually is rated at a safety factor of at least 3. So if the "working load" is 6500, the "breaking strength" would be about 19,500, give or take. The link you posted does not have any useful information about the pintle, however, which was more a subject for discussion than the...

Ratings for shackles and pintle hook? how to open the hook? And starter ?s

Just because the TMs mention something similar does not mean that what they say is universally true and can be applied to unrelated situations. What you posted says that the "maximum towed load" for an M1009 is 1200 pounds, which, as already posted, has a LOT more to do with brakes, wheelbase...

Ratings for shackles and pintle hook? how to open the hook? And starter ?s

    1. Where the hell did you get that number? 2. If it is correct, it's an imbecilic rating, since the trucks were rated to tow heavier trailers than that, with the pintle hitch. 3. I have no idea what the actual rating is, but I've pulled Blazers, Jeeps and the like out of the mud many, many...

    M1008 axles into a m1009

The other alternative is to get axles from a civilian truck with better gearing for the highway, like 3.73s. They won't be any different from the D60/14BFF in the 1008s.

Want to see pics of gov. locker in CUCV's

    Just for fun: 3.07 = 43/14 3.08 = 40/13 ... 3.300 = 33 / 10 3.308 = 43 / 13 3.333 = 20 / 6 3.333 = 30 / 9 3.333 = 40 / 12 3.333 = 50 / 15 3.357 = 47 / 14 3.364 = 37 / 11 3.375 = 27 / 8 3.375 = 27 / 8 3.385 = 44 / 13 3.400 = 17 / 5 3.400 = 34 / 10 3.400 = 51 / 15 3.417 = 41 / 12 3.429 = 24 / 7...

    4WD dos/don'ts/cans/can'ts

    1. Open in stock configuration. 2. Yes. No. 3. Yes. Shifting into 4wd with the hubs unlocked (or with an open, with even one hub unlocked) would be pointless. 4. I've heard anything from 25 to 55. Really, though, if I'm going more than about 15mph, I likely don't have much use to shift into...

    Ebay starters...bad idea?

I've heard prices between $75 and $100. Even at the high end of the scale, it's still cheaper (and likely faster) than buying an unknown replacement, and the quality of the rebuilt component is known.

    Ebay starters...bad idea?

Some are, as are some ambulances, heavy duty trucks and other applications. Why?

    Portal axle pricing info: FYI

Putting the 14 bolt/Dana 60 into a K5 is pretty common, check out Colorado K5 - Full-Size GM 4x4 Restoration and Off Road Community for more info.

    Ebay starters...bad idea?

Just to clarify, when I say things like "China junk" or "Chinese generics" or whatever, I'm not so much referring to the actual country of origin, which may be China, Japan, Mexico, Germany, or even the US, I just mean "cheaply made no-name stuff possibly of dubious quality." China just tends to...

    Ebay starters...bad idea?

The used one is the "known" one, the problem is that it's tough to know what condition it's in, and how long it'd last. The other two don't mention a brand or anything anywhere that I could find, which makes me suspect that they're generic Chinese items. That said, they may prove to be of...

    Ebay starters...bad idea?

Since ebay neither makes nor sells anything, it would be useful for you to post a link to what starter or starters you are considering, or at least give us more information as to the specs. Some of the stuff on ebay is good stuff, other stuff on ebay is China junk crap. This is, of course...

    Top Crusing Speed?

Not even close. 4.56 instead of 3.08 gears, and the stock tire diameters are different. Top speed of an M1008 is around 72mph (I calculated it once, feel free to plug into the calculator I posted earlier) with the stock ~32" tires. Realistic top cruising speed is 55-60mph.

Read all FAQ's, but have new questions

Let me know, I'd be interested. Or you could just junk all the existing wiring and run all the 12v stuff out of a 24v-12v converter.

Read all FAQ's, but have new questions

If that's true, that'd be awesome. I could convert the two alternators to 24v, run them in parallel, and even if one goes out, the other is there as a backup. And when both were running in parallel, it'd double the wattage of the system and I could run an even bigger inverter. I mean, you can...

Read all FAQ's, but have new questions

Because it's a good way to get an unmodified, generally rust free and generally inexpensive truck. Same reasons I bought the M1008, had nothing to do with the fact that it was military. The only truly military specific stuff is the whacky starting/charging system. Since mine is operating OK...

Total destruction of all End-Use items (end of trucks???)

I'm sure another thread would pop up soon to accommodate those rumors, if past history is any guide. ;)
