    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

Yes. A deuce is a good vehicle for some, not for others. Yeesh. Is that what you wanted? And who the hell was saying for him to spend $35,000 on a truck? That's a REALLY good way to make sure that the comparison falls to the deuce. $8500 will buy a LOT of truck nowadays. So will $5000, or...

    snow troubles

Go to any hardware store and buy a piece of thin sheet metal, steel or aluminum. Aluminum is preferred, as it's easier to work with and won't rust, although it's more expensive. Cut/bend it into the desired shape, then attach with self-tapping screws and/or bolts and/or rivets where desired...

    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

Fine, but when I need something to work, I need something to work. I have no use for ANOTHER project vehicle that winds up diverting time from projects that I enjoy more. Let's just be clear- YOU asked a question about the cost of entry and how it compared. I answered it. In the future, don't...

    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

Yeah, if you're willing to pay the overnight rates, and sit around the next day waiting for the UPS/FedEx/mail guy, and you get the order in early in the day so that it makes it out in that day's shipments, then it's fine. Auto parts stores generally get the part in the next day, as long as you...

    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

Yeah, the gear lube and tires aren't that bad, but go driving somewhere, and lose a waterpump. Or an alternator, or a power steering pump, or fuel pump, or whatever. If it's a Ford/Chevy/Isuzu/Dodge, and running a Duramax, or PowerStroke, or Cummins, the part will be available at any auto parts...

Intro and a couple of questions guys.

Due to the gearing, the M1008 top speed is around 70mph. I'd recommend bigger tires and/or overdrive gear for higher speeds. If you want a 700R4, let me know, I've got most of the parts needed to swap it in (trans, torque converter, transfer case, etc.), and I need them gone.

    Military TUG

Interesting, thanks for the info. We took one of the Dodge flightline tow tractors out today, it's a squirrelly little bugger! With the low gearing, it drops second before the turbo can even spool.

    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

If you can find one locally that's in good shape (not only does everything work, but typical wear-out parts have been recently replaced) and has a good asking price, that's 90% of the battle, really. And, if you're using it infrequently for non-critical things, then I doubt it'd be a big deal...

    Deuce as a tow-rig? Am I crazy?

I'll chime in, since I was once considering using a deuce for towing cars to race tracks. Obviously race cars aren't that heavy and don't need much of a trailer or tow vehicle. I was planning to use the bed essentially as a shop as well. Seemed like a good idea. Then I looked into alternatives...

    i wanna winch

They make 24v and 12v ones, as well as PTO ones if you want to change the transfer case to one that has a PTO (like a 205). I was contemplating a 24v one, as it'd likely be better than a 12v one, but then I realized that 12v ones are more common secondhand, and I'll likely be converting to 12v...

    Military TUG

Any fullsize vehicle isn't very good for wheeling, especially 1-tons. They're too physically large, and the springs are too stiff and don't allow for enough articulation. And they're HEAVY. Yeah, they can go real far off-road, but they won't rock crawl like a truggy, or anything close. Then...

Interesting that those are Chevy, the ones that have been up for auction around here are all Dodge.

    Military TUG

My buddy just bought a few of them. I'm going over to look at one tonight, all of his were just "flight line tow tractors." 12v Cummins and 7.xx gears with a locker is pretty cool. Apparently they don't even have locks on the doors.

    Power Steering Fluid

I'd say that it'd be a bigger issue to track down the leak, so that you don't have to keep dumping fluid into it. PS pump rebuild kits are cheap, so are lines.
  15. H

    Power Steering Fluid

It's fine. It calls for Dexron II, anything higher (the only option being Dexron III) can be added, and obviously Dexron II can be added, much like DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluids can be mixed, or GL-5 can be used in gearsets calling for GL-4, barring sulfer issues with the GL-5 and synchronizers...
  16. H

    Power Steering Fluid

You can get Dexron II, and yes, it is power steering fluid, but since Dexron III (ATF) supersedes Dexron II applications, either will work. Same fluid is called for in the transfer case.

    water in fuel

There are kits out there to add pretty much whatever you want in terms of filtration, water separation, whatever. I find the stock filter to be sufficient. You could also go to your local auto parts store and/or Tractor Supply or similar store and piece together whatever you need. All you'd have...

    water in fuel

It's built into the fuel filter. There are two knobs. One is on the top- that's the air bleed. There is another on the bottom, which should have a hose attached to it. That's where you drain the water.
  19. H

    water in fuel

Why not just drain the water separator? If you want to replace the filter, they're $25 or so at any auto parts store. To avoid air in the lines as much as possible, I usually fill them with diesel before putting them on. Makes it a bit more messy, but a drain pan underneath will take care of...

    M1028/1008 Ring and Pinion Gears

Anybody who wants to do the trans swap let me know, I've got a 700, with torque converter, (from a diesel application, I believe a 3/4 ton Suburban, so all ready to bolt in) matched NP241 t-case and a couple other parts sitting in a buddy's shed that I need to get rid of.
