are the batteries FULLY charged? That seems to be something that has created issues for many looking at threads. Check the obvious if you haven't done so
I'm no expert but I been told it can also scar the cylinder walls. I should say when I was told that it was in regards to 2 cycle gas engines so I'd assume it could be hard on anything?
Just a dummy here but it sounds like not so good an idea to me. I'll just get a bigger generator if I need more
I just as soon not toast my electronics for the sake of an experiment
No expert here but I'd probably make sure I have good clean connections everywhere and then throw a charger on it for a bit before I'd start anything drastic. I may be way off base but just my thoughts.

Wouldn't connecting the ground directly to the ground rod in effect to the same thing. You would have the same common ground as you panel.
If I am not mistaken you need to remove the neutral bond on the generator chassis if doing it this way! Is that correct?
I believe Ray70 covered it pretty well. One other thing I guess to consider is a flat on the way or a flat when you get there that cannot be repaired without removing/replacing the tire. I'd get an early start in case you have to do a little work there and if you don't you'll be home early
