No, I did not check the control arm against the other side but I will do that tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. I have some frame experience. If the control arm is the same I will go to a frame shop.
When I got the 998 the right rear geared hub was not on it. The top control arm was missing also. I bought a top control arm and installed everything. Now after the test drive I have noticed that the right rear wheel is out too far at the top. Did I get the wrong top control arm? I did check the...
Thanks. This hobby sure does get into your blood and deep into pocket. I have been at this for over 20 years and still cant get the green fever cured. How do you tell what glass fits the windshield frame? I don't plan on armor so I was thinking about having auto glass cut to fit. Now I need to...
Maiden Voyage
Well after many hours of work and several busted knuckles I took the 998 for a test run. Everything went good. Still need some parts but it is starting to come together.
I did make up an aux grounding harness and install it. I may have went a little overboard with it because I grounded everything that I thought may need a ground. I cleaned all points of contact and used dielectric grease on everything. Thanks for the reminder.
Sarge29
The first PCB was a SSI that would not fire the glow plugs. Everything else seemed to work OK. So then I put in a used KDS Yellow label box. That is the box that failed and fried the plugs. Now I have a new KDS Green label box to go in and I just didn't want to take any chances on something in...
I finally have the 998 about ready to test drive. Before I put power on the truck again I would like to check the wiring for anything that may cause more problems. Last time I tried this I had a EESS box failure and had to replace all glow plugs and the EES box as well. I have used the ohm...
OK, Before anyone says it: nopics Here are the results of a PCB gone bad. This is worst of the 8 plugs. The others were burned out but did not blow out. The ends that are out of the plugs actually blew out with a loud pop and sparks then hitting the body but stayed in the wire connector.
I finally got everything bolted up tight and filled all fluids yesterday. I decided it was time for the ultimate smoke test. I double checked everything and hit the start switch. It was a little slow to spin but then it came to life. The engine ran great. It idles smooth but seemed a...
Starter bracket
I have a starter off of a 1008 that I will be using temporarily on my 998. Once I got it mounted I tried to put the support bracket on and it will not fit auaauaaua I put the bolt in the engine block and the hole for the starter stud did not line up with the stud. I thought that...
OK That crossmember is headed to my scrap pile. The transfer if finally mounted to the transmission. Now to connect the drive shafts, then plumb and fill the transmission. After that I will check and recheck everything then comes the good part. Test run of the engine. I hope it runs well.
Thanks Nattieleather, definitely a project, but I love a challenge. I found the mechanical modulator for the transmission and hope to get it in this week. I found out today that some of the exhaust manifold/header bolts have gone AWOL. I thought about taking the windshield frame to a local...
Slow and Steady
When I first picked this up there was lots to be done and lots of parts needed. The first thing that I noticed was that the right rear geared hub was off and the transmission was gone. Little did I know, That was just the start. Everything that had been taken off that had a wire...
What does this fit??
This crossmember was in my M998 when I got it home. The transmission was out so I figured that was where it went. Wrong. I don't see anywhere it goes. Any Ideas?
I guess I went brain dead.aua I knew to go to the classifieds, but when you get a few years on you it is hard to remember everything. I will have to pay more attention to what I post. Maybe I wont get shot this time.
Thanks to everyone for all of the help so far. I have a wish list of parts for my1989 M998 that will help me get in pretty good shape on the mechanical side of this rebuild (I hope). I still have to go through all 4 geared hubs just to make sure all is well in there. Send me a PM with any parts...
