Will it shift manually? Check the valve that NDT in referencing, not sure its a valve but they dry rot... that part is also adjustable. It controls how early or late shifts happen. I will find a pic of what I'm talking about.
Having to depress the throttle during cold start in not uncommon, it’s actaully how you start the vehicle during cold weather conditions. I believe the TM states half throttle above 32F and fully depressed under 32F. If the plugs weren’t working it wouldn’t fire up. The condition you describe...

OK....figured it was the shovel and I was gonna be a hero today. Do this, measure the shovel. Since the problem isn’t solved I will get pics of mine to include the mount. PM me a cell number. It will be easier to text several photos.
I think bikeman is correct. The handle of my shovel fits inside the bracket your shovel appears to sit on the outside of. I’ll get a pic up when day breaks around here.
