The top passenger side bolt was the most difficult for me to get to. I had 1 in bad shape I replaced by going to AutoZone.

Mine looked the same, along with the Trans pan magnet. The Engine plug magnet has always been clean.

I rotate my flexplate with a socket and 3/4" ratchet on the harmonic balancer bolt. You may want to confirm the rear main seal, and replace if needed while doing the flexplate.

When I replaced mine I got it for <$30 through Saturn. If you find cracks this could be a good option to save money.

I would get an assistant to attempt to crank while I use my multimeter at the starter solenoid and measure the voltage, if there is any.

Can you post a picture of the wiring that you see? It's difficult to visualize and determine if it will work or not.

My Rebuilt 27MT Direct Drive Starter spins MUCH faster than it did prior to the rebuild. The advantages of the 28MT are many. However, I find the 27 more than adequate when in good condition powered by healthy batteries. I run 2 Group 31 Interstate batteries.

For the use you have described I would plan on upgrading the M1008 (trans cooler, gearing, etc) or go with a newer truck. Based on my experiance where my truck does the best is offroad payload capability. Pulling a trailer, due to the HP, is where it will have more trouble. Can it do it, yes...
