Should have phoned or texted me. If it is running no need to apply glow control. All the talk of after glow and cycling was an poor attempt at emission control. When one has a computer... there always a computer programmer looking to find something to do or sell an up-date LOL

It should move 1/4" +/- of center and that's a lot of degrees. It can take a little muscle leverage to rotate and hold it there while the lines spring back one way or another. while holding and tightening one of the flange bolts. I don't think this should be all that hard. First time may seem...
Breaker bar works too. Here's a tool from the Camoteksystems lab I made years ago to tweek pump timing. The two pins fits right into the indexing holes with no slipping or hassle. Takes the fuss and fight right out of those lines. Like RWH states a little is a lot.

Coca-cola or tab...your decide, CAMO
Even with one bad glow plug, one can get a puff or two of smoke. Two plugs bad and cold, say 50 degrees, Puff Puff or three with a little more white smoke. Simple test is to be familiar with the dash voltmeter. 50 degrees , first time cold start, all plugs heating and with strong...
Depending on fuel quality for me... when the high temperature never get above + 40 and at night dips in the high teens or less for most of the night. Cheap insurance. Some diesel additive will keep your rig running in the freezing weather.
Global warming ?? or freeze your HumV dead in it's...
