Between those two choices, you need to decide if you want the economy of a diesel, or the performance of gasoline engine.
The mfg dates on the trucks you cited are a little off, might want to do a little more research.
Have bought 5 MEPs from GL. I try not to bid on very high hours units or ones with damaged or missing parts. Lowest hrs was 9 on an recent 802 reset. Highest, a 002 with 1,800. Most have needed a little work, a couple needed more, but that was OK too. Having to fix something is a good way...
If it oscillates at all, it is time to replace. Remember, the rubber between the metal is 30 years old. It is a fairly cheap and easy job compared to replacing a motor.
Hopefully you understand about the "only one ground to neutral bond" in your system that DieselAddict mentioned above.
In the 802 there is a strap between ground & LO. You should know whether it should be hooked in or not depending on your set up.
If you don't know, you should look into it...
^^The size of the head is because they are robust and overbuilt. Where a modern "consumer grade" civilian generator rated a 5 KW means it can make 5KW for a few minuits at a time when it is new, 5KW on an MEP means it can make 7KW (at least in the case of the 002) all day, 24/7 for thousands...
The windings are indeed robust. But they are not different than any old style or commercial grade, well made 1800RPM, 12 lead connected generator. The MEP-002 and 003 use the same gen head as their respective counterparts in the Onan DJ series.
If you look up an Onan DJE for instance, you...
About the vibration not being in sync with RPM, don't know, but one of my 1008s developed new vibration & I knew the balancer was worn, so I replaced it and the vibration went away. One guy I know had a crankshaft break because he did not get around replacing a balancer he knew was bad. He...
If a previous owner did a lot of rock crawling, or just pounding around with a load, the frame rivets may have loosened up enough to allow it to flex.
If this is the case, body mounts will not necessarily help. I had one that flexed so much it opened up a seam in the cab floor. Frame could...
I understand why you would want them all German made, but I doubt they could any damage. They were made to the same spec and will work better than the old ones.
If you have access to a pop tester, check the spray pattern on the two types and see if they are noticeably different. Let us know...
Most of the CUCVs I bought from GL, back when there were a lot of them for sale, were low mileage vehicles. Highest one I ever bought had 65K miles.
One of the best drivers I have of the lot, all the maintenance up to date, was at 60 K miles. Some were much lower miles. Most 1031s and...
Well, I messed up, the van has a 4L80.
Anyway, the 6L80 swap would not be worth it unless you were going to drop a 6BT or similar. The 6.2 or even 6.5 in turbo would be pressed to make enough torque.
Ignore bold type, I just hit some odd key...
