The Marines on my base used them up untill 2003.
A PFC was killed during a roll over and that promped them to shift to some funky looking Brinks style armored with a open turret car for patrols.
I have about 6000 miles behind 2 different deuces in tha last 2 years and other than the turbo noise and the driving style your trip sounded just like one of mine.
One deuce is bone stock and one has upped fuel.

I have 5 of them, and the poster that said it was to feed small engines was correct just like the dip-tube syphon cap the US uses.
