Good luck with the resto. I am trying to do a rolling restoration on mine, the only problem is that every time I get it rolling I find another thing to fix:smile: Even though it is not perfect, it still turns a lot of heads and 99% of people can not tell the little things that are missing.
That is helpful but it did not really say if GL1 will work or not. I will probably go with the NAPA GL1 for the trans and transfer case. GL5 is fine for the diffs right? I have not seen anything about them having yellow metal.
I went to get my gear oil today and quickly discovered that everything is GL5. I don't want to mess up my jeep but I cannot find GL4 for the life of me. I did see a GL1 gear oil, would that work OK in the trans, transfer case, and diffs?
Looks like it was a great trip, thanks for posting all those pictures. I am hoping to get my m38a1 out on a little road trip this fall, maybe through the UP or out to some sand dunes. Watch out for the fires out there, seems like everything out west is burning right now.
From what I have seen it looks like the civi parts for the hubs will work but I just want to make sure I don't get everything torn apart just to not have the right parts on hand. I have a feeling it has been a very long time since anyone has been in this hub so it could be fun getting apart.
Thanks. I have not been able to spend too much time on the other forums because of my busy schedule. It is good to bring info like this to SS though, it seems like we are a little light on some of the M38A1 stuff. One more question, can you get all of the seals for the diffs and transfer case...
I am looking at replacing most of the fluids in my jeep before I attempt a long trip up north. My TM's all show old types of oil and lube that are not produced any more. What are most of you guys using for the engine. transmission, transfer case, and diffs. Also does anyone have a good source...
Well I have had a bit of a vacation from steelsoldiers and my new jeep while I was working on med school applications but that is wrapped up now so it is time to get the jeep to its new home. I am bringing it from my brothers garage to mine for a week before it makes the 3 hour drive to our...
Welcome to the site. You should get a gamma goat, they have a detroit diesel and I can just about guarantee that none of your trucks are quite like a goat.
I liked how much the last thread like this went into chemistry of combustion. It gave me a chance to finally put my ed-u-ma-ca-tion to work :) On a serious note, just park in the back of the lot, not only will it increase your health and give you a couple more years of life but it will make...
Thank you, luckily my fiance likes the new jeep and is excited for the radiator to be fixed so she can try her hand at driving it. I will defiantly be keeping my eyes open from now on trying to acquire cheap parts and piece my little jeep back together until it is original again.
