I'll second the idea of dropping at least the front tire pressure. If I notice the front on my deuce (W/W) starting to sink in soft ground, I stop and drop the tire pressure to 15 psi and try again. Usually that will take care of the sinkage issue just fine... NDT's do suck for soft soil...
I bought another air pressure guage for mine (psi is psi) and installed it as my oil press gauge. Works fine. Had some leftover plastic tubing from some other install, so I used it for this one. No more wondering if the gauge or sender is bad now... :)

What gringeltaube is trying to point out is that in order for the firestones to make your truck sit 4" higher, they'd have to be 8" taller than the XL's. And they're not. (They are in fact a tad bit taller than the XL's, but not 8".)
It is interesting to wonder why that one truck is so...
My deuce was like this when I first bought it too... It doesn't seem to do that anymore, and the brake drum was pretty rusty at the time. Drum looks better now, but there's some oily mess on the mechanism that I need to clean off...
Might just need some TLC and a little mileage to clean up...
Ok, I am finally in a position to buck up for some new treads... I already have some older deuce wheels designed for singles, so it'll hopefully not look quite so skinny out back once they're mounted up...
My question is this... has anyone had any experiences good or bad with Firestone...
You have to remember that when these trucks were made, the standard "convoy speed" was 45mph, so they were geared appropriately for that... Freeway speeds with these trucks are well above what it was intended for. (or even capable of...)
In a 6.2L, the torque falls off pretty quickly...
Towed mine home about 500 miles on a tandem dually gooseneck... 20k rated. I've seen one (on ss a while ago) on a tandem axle gooseneck with singles, (usually rated for 14k) and that did NOT look cool. Seriously overloaded tires, axles, bearings, springs... Eeeek.

I'll hopefully have some mounted 9.00-20's to get rid of this summer. I found some old single style wheels and just need to buck up and order tires for them, then I have 10 used 9.00's that will need a new home!
Looking at the pics, I'd guess he didn't want to "overload" the borrowed truck, so he put the truck on the very back of the trailer. Judging by where the truck sits in rlation to the deck of the trailer and the axles, there was very little tongue weight... He is certainly to be commended...

M1008's have a goofy load adjusting prop valve, so if you mess with the arm...
I converted my '96 GMC to disk brakes. Has the same 14 bolt FF rear that's in the CUCV. I used rebuilt cadillac calipers for a '78 Eldorado, but they didn't come with any of the parking brake hardware, and I still don't have it. Used rotors from the front of an early 80's 3/4 ton and brackets...

The detroit locker in your rear axle basically allows either tire to ratchet AHEAD of driven speed, but not fall behind. This in effect means you're always driving off the INSIDE tire in a turn, while the outside tire is allowed to ratchet...

As Mike said, you have to use the front battery, as it has ground common with the truck ground. Since it has its own alternator, there's no worry about running it down compared to the other. Just make sure it's a good battery.
The only holes that will be there already are the ones in...
I believe it's the same as a HEMTT. If I recall, they use the same front axle as a HEMTT, and the rear of the front unit is a HEMTT rear, and the rears of the trailer unit are slightly different because they have selectable lockers in them. (NICE!!)
