    Found a 5 ton gasser.

That looks like a "low mile" truck to me. Over the years here, I saw a lot of them. Get it running, and take it to the car wash, and you'll be real happy. That is, probably all except for the gas millage. That is one of the big reasons why industry didn't use too many of them. Changing to...

Fifth Wheel Looks Different on My 818

Just in case you don't know, be sure to grease the top of that plate. It will take at least a half tube of grease - spread it around with a piece of cardboard, before you slide under your trailer. Lee in Alaska

    m37 frame qustion ,new guy

Boy, that's too bad that somebody messed that up so bad. They spent a lot of time screwing it up too. Its a little hard to tell from the pics, but you might want to replace the tail ends of the frame too. Once you get the bed off, you'll be able to see a lot more.... Good Luck Lee in Alaska

    M818: Recommended Tire Pressures?

I find that 60 psi is an all around compromise. If I'm going to be loaded heavier, on a long run, then more air. But usually its short stuff and mind you, the ride is not really super. Lower air would be a little better, but not in winter, when its cold, you should be adding more air, to...

    Deuce door windows

JC Whitney used to have various "universal" window channels that would fit, at reasonable prices. Lee in Alaska

    Bead Breaker

An Old tire man once told me, that if your really working hard, to change a tire, your doing it wrong!.. The bottom line is that a "duck bill" hammer and a slide hammer, are about as fast as anything. That precludes the fact, that you have to learn how to swing that hammer. Sledge hammers don't...

    Tire tool

The clever engineers had a suspicion that sort of thing might happen, so they stamped things to give Folks a hint of the direction.

    Tire tool

Get the "L" & "R" mixed up and the torque requirements tend to jump exponentally! Lee

    Tire tool

L & R are stamped on the ends, or on the shoulders of the nuts. Otherwise its Left Hand/Left side. Right Hand/right side. On any of those "Budd" type wheels, you need a six foot cheater pipe (1&1/4" pipe) to get the lugs off. When you put them on, you tighten them till they "pop". Little 2...

Winching under & to the rear

When your in a pickle....... Winch backwards, but re string your line straight down from the winch. Don't go out over the bumper - that is asking for trouble. You will be desperate to do something anyway. Lee in Alaska

    Toolbox

We always need tool box storage. But I'm afraid that it will fill every nook and cranny of the front there, with mud, slop, and grime. Hate to be negative, but just being objective. Good Luck Lee in Alaska

    cupping tires

Another thing about "cupping", or excessive wear, is braking. Especially on cross lug tire pattern. Normal braking will wear the front part of the lug. When you look at the wear patterns, we usually look at the top of the tire, but the wear patter is backwards there, from where it is actually...

Air system leaks! I want a cure

I'm not familiar with the 818 specifically, but on air systems, you have a number of different valves that are supposed to do something for you. Leaking is not one of them. These trucks that have the copper air lines, often have corrosion inside of them. Some of the valves are "quick release...

    Deuce driving in snow

Airing up & down is text book stuff. It takes a lot of time 7 its a cold dirty job, and there is also the risk of finding a faulty valve stem that just leaks off the air. Otherwise, JAWALLER nailed it. Chain her, all the way around and you'll be ready to go someplace. NDT's are notorious for...

    Axle Flange Gasket or Sealant

I use paper gaskets/make my own. Only takes a few minutes. Use a magazine cover. Cut a hole in it. Drop it over the axle shaft and use a small ball pean to tap out the outline. I us R/V sealant on both sides. An old time mechanic started me that way. Lee in Alaska

Military M211 Gas Truck Exhaust System

Yeah - that oval muffler is a hard part, but looks like you have it under control. A muffler shop Guy can make the flanges for the pipes. The way it is set up originally is pretty good. If there was a flex pipe though, before and after the muffler, it would last longer. I put a lot of miles...

    Deuce heater options

Cheap and Good, are usually on opposite ends of the spectrum. Half of the heat goes toward keeping the windows clear. Unless your truck is tight, & do a good job on the defrost stuff, even the fuel fired heater is marginal. At -30, things have to be in the "good" range. Lee in Alaska

    Deuce trailer brake controller?

Back in the old days, they had some "mostly conventional" trailers. That thing on the steering column is a reiostate to control the supply of juice to the electric brakes. I came across a couple of them over the years. I used one to control & adjust 24v to run 12v lights. Lee in Alaska
