I purchased a M35a2 about two years before DLA contracted with GL. At that time it was by sealed bid and before they started dumping large numbers of 2.5 ton trucks. It was my first EUC and it took DLA 14 weeks to approve it. Future EUCs went quicker. Long initial waits are nothing new.
Army engineer units commonly used a 5 ton tractor and lowboy to haul loads as you described. How to haul an excavator, or a D7 for that matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwkq6hvhJiA
The Irish army has done something similar with Ford F350s. Here is a modelers' website with a lot of detailed pictures. I am thinking of doing something similar with a ragged out CUCV.

It's not a record. When the MVPA had their Alaska Highway convoy a few years ago, some of our members as well ad others from FL and AL participated and drove all the way up there and back. All were in 2.5 and 5 tons except for one M37. The round trip was 12,000 miles total , give or take.
73M819: the guy you are thinking about is Horace Rowland. He was Lamar Rowlands' brother and lived near Douglasville. He was a longtime Dixie Division member and always at our rallies.
It's for a SINCGARS manpack. Won't fit any of the vehicle antenna bases. 30 to 108 MHz range. http://www.rami.com/product/manpackhandheld/a3256531-1-green/
Some of our club members have the 900 series trucks. As far as I know, none have encountered problems, and most don't have a CDL. We have some members in your part of the state. Our website: http://www.ddmvpa.org/ We also have a facebook page where you could get quick answers...
I was watching those along with the rest of the auction. Funny how on two of them someone would throw in a bid in the last 10 seconds and extend the time, must have thought they were on ebay. They must have went high because they were so nice and shiny.
