Well. It isn't pretty.
Every gear/synchro surface was rust pitted. The top cover was coated in rust debris and water emulsion.
Considering I just ran her almost 200 miles, I'm almost surprised it's in this good of shape.
Opinions? Run it 'till it chunks? It's not that bad? Swap it now? aua...
Yep... and a little goes a long way. I wet sandblasted this wheel 2 weeks ago and sprayed some Prep 'n' Etch on it with a $.89 spraybottle. She'll hold until i get some primer and paint on her.
I might try a gallon or so of diesel in her tomorrow and fire her up and run it through the gears a couple of times with the T-case in neutral.
Then drain that out, and see what I have from the top when I pull the cover.
Sound rational? After I filter and settle the diesel for a few months...
Well... Hmm... I'm calling it a day a bit early.
A: Rain on and off put a crimp in some of the plans.
B: This video shows you guys what I'm looking at.
I mixed some gasoline into the gear oil cake-batter I got out and will let that sit to (hopefully) de-emulsify enough that I can filter it...
Great idea!
I'm not looking forward to dropping a trans. I also don't want Dennis to be out a trans. He had no way of knowing there was water in the bottom of that beast until I drove it and it emulsified...
If I can clean it, and save it, I will. Better for all involved.
Guys, any ideas for something to flush the tranny with to clean it out? Diesel? Kerosene? gasoline? Mineral spirits? I'm thinking brake parts cleaner might be a bit too expensive and when every last drop of old lube is gone cause problems with my pushing gears back and forth by hand looking for...
The way I look at it from the outside, the synchro isn't spinning the 3rd gear up like it should for engagement. That could be because the contaminated fluid is raising cob with the synchro doing so, or because it has failed. Maybe both.
With any luck, it's just the fluid level and thickness...
Update:
I got some time to work on her today... The trans fluid is VERY full and milky. She still won't go into 3rd until she hits 20mph when downshifting... she upshifts as well as I expect a 40 year old truck to shift. The oil on the clutch was definitely from the trans. It was so overfull...
The deuce pumps and HHs are interchangeable... heck the LDS/LDT pumps are interchangeable! (The LDS spec pumps are supposed to move more fuel, but both will work.)
The FDC doesn't make the truck multifuel, it just makes various fuels have the same HP output at a given throttle position. The one...
We will have to cruise Westnedge one of these Friday/Saturday nights when the kids have the rice burners out. I think a couple of M35s might stand out in the crowd.

There are pics in there of my LDS pump.
Also, clean the whole area with something... I used $1 store oven cleaner because I like my money and it's about the same stuff as the $5 Gunk foamy engine bright.
Once you do that...
Beat me to it!
As for the fuel lines, I thought mine were bad... yours might run ok, but I feel for the stress that lift pump must be under trying to push through those restrictions.
When you fix those, you might notice a serious jump in power.
I highly doubt that... but it's older that I am so I suppose anything is possible.
Did they ever "black-out" trucks in country during Vietnam for night cargo runs?
One interesting thing.... as you guys can see from the pics, the paint is peeling in a massive way all the way down the the pre-1972 era semi-gloss green with white numbers and the big star on the door.
The layer that is separating is black.... not black as in a little in sections to be a...
Got the primary to pump 1/2 copper line patched. I ran her for a few minutes to let her warm up and so I could verify the new lines/fittings are holding. (They are.)
I'm a bit curious about that "LDS465 1C" injection pump/HH assembly sitting on this truck. Anyone familiar with the specs on this...
Fixed the last crushed fuel line, tracked down the source of my turn signal issues, and De-greased the engine to be able to verify it was no longer leaking ANYTHING.
