The genset is weather resistant. Mind the electrical, though. Things like proper grounds become very important when you're standing in a puddle of water.

I think the MEPs are supposed to flash the field every time you start them. Check the relays. If you're getting it to flash by repeatedly wiggling the start switch then you probably have a wacky relay or loose connection.

Sometimes you can start small gens with 12V fed to the slave recep. Try at your own risk, though.

I'm a fan of the SX460. The newer style MEP 3600RPM VRs are not hard to repair, though. You might try the usual suspects, Delks, Saturn Surplus, Gulf Coast Trucks, etc. if you just want to buy an OE unit.

I like the 016D the best. The E variants have a 10HP Yanmar which I feel is wasted on a 3kW gen. The Yanmars will run on veg oil and other things, but I don't think they are mufti-fuel in the same way the Dueces are.

There should be a solenoid that engages the throttle. #3 in the pic. Do you not have that?

OK, I thought you wanted a starter for a 026C. The 026B starters are the same as the 016B. You just want a 24V starter for a 016B. 16 = AC generator output. 26 = DC generator output.

There is a compression release lever on top of the Yanmar. Pull the rope slowly until you reach a compression stroke, filp the lever down, and give the rope a good hard long pull. That's how I start mine.

That is one reason I ditched the ASK from the 016E/701A that I got. If you get a 701A with a Yanmar just remove the ASK kit and you have a 016E. You could probably leave the top on.

The TMs lay it out so that your basic grunt can perform the task. You should be able to get it. It is probably a lot easier than you think.

701A will be either Onan (original) or Yanmar (updated to 016E) powered. Yanmar engines have a pull rope for starting. The Onans do not.

You can always re-wire the conv outlet but it is probably easier to just make a whip and put a 4x4 box on the end with a couple of 120V duplex 20A outlets.

Looks like the party has been thoroughly crashed. 3kW Diesels are now going for about 2X what I paid for mine not long ago. I'll keep an eye on some in the future but don't feel confident about getting any more under $300.
