A 12V flash would probably work. You just need to give it a little magnetism to start the process. Once it gets a little it can build the rest. Usually the residual magnetism is sufficient unless the set has been unused for a long time.

With it running what do you read at the battery? It should be 25-28V or so DC. If you get that then your little 4 wire VR box is OK.

That is a VR but not "the" VR. I'll attach a pic of the newer type VR. There is an older type in some that looks different but is about the same size.

Are you trying to fix a problem with the generator head and the 120V/240V AC system or is your gen not making 24V DC to charge the battery?

That's the 24V DC regulator for the battery charging system. The SX460 replaces the VR for the generator head.
