About to pick up my MEP 003A

IP and VR are usually the first things to go.

About to pick up my MEP 003A

You will probably find something major wrong with it, either bad gen head or bad motor. Also, be more careful posting screen shots. I can see an email address and bookmarks for two credit card companies. I don't think anyone on SS would use that against you but stuff posted on the www is...

    mep 003a new owner

    52 Amps at 240V is 12,480 Watts. 52 X 240 = 12,480. Why 52 and not 50? Who knows?

    no volts or freq's!!

Some SX460 to 002/003 info here: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/auxiliary-equipment/95041-c-voltage-regulator-board-repair.html I haven't done it yet but it seems to look OK on paper. Ike is right about the 002s and 003s having a more complicated VR arrangement but it looks do-able.

    Test to check Droop

Did you adjust the governor per the TM?

    Test to check Droop

That is why they have a throttle adjust knob and frequency meter.

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

Maybe the regulator regulates by sinking the output of the Bridge? Or, maybe the VR adds DC to supplement the Bridge output?

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

OK. Why is the output of the Bridge parallel with the Field and I assume the output of the VR?

MEP Jerry can adapters vs. 55 gallon drum adapters

I think I found the answer:

MEP Jerry can adapters vs. 55 gallon drum adapters

What's the difference? The length of the pickup tube?
  11. D

First generator: MEP-002a got running today, thanks!

That plug is nice thing to have. Both jerry can adapters and 55g drum adapters are sought after.

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

Looks like G2 (battery charge 24V alternator) may feed the motor controls. Maybe the Bridge is just there to feed the Curr Volt Xfmr for the meters? That seems to make sense. If so, then the Bridge gets to stay and connections are...

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

The 002s and 003s have motor control relays (DC control circuit) and things that are powered by what? If the answer is that bridge then we'll have to look closely at what to keep and what to remove. The Field, being a DC thing, should not matter for grounding purposes, right? It may be tied...

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

I'm not an expert but below are some of my opinions. Use them at your own risk. When/if I get around to fixing my 003 and if the VR is not working I plan to use an SX460. When/if that happens I plan to document it and share the knowledge. If you do not understand what is going on and the...

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

It has been noted that the Hardy Diesel meters are not easy to read in direct sunlight. But, for $20 they are in some ways better than the KillAWatt. Isaac installed a SX460 on his 016. I've run a 016 with one but haven't made the install permanent, yet. Wiring on an 002 or 003 should be...

    A/C Voltage regulator board repair

I'd try an SX460 for $60 before I spent too much on having one repaired. I'm confident I could repair them myself. If you want original then by all means fix em. If you want functional and reliable then consider a modern VR or have them totally rebuilt with new components, at least new...

    Auxiliary panel question

Yep. The outlet is rated for 30A but the gen that panel was made for was probably a 5kW and only capable of delivering 20A.

    Auxiliary panel question

I think so. A balanced load is always better but a little unbalance shouldn't hurt. For example, if you want to run two 9A 120V loads you can plug them both into the same outlet (using the panel in this thread as example) and it would work fine. But, the generator would be happier if you...

    Auxiliary panel question

Over 20A on either breaker will trip it before too long but you can run a 240V load and a 120V load at the same time. For example if you had a well pump that draws 5 amps 240V and a 120V device that draws 5 amps you could run both.

    Auxiliary panel question

Why can't you run both at the same time?
