Looks like an auto reset thermal breaker:

I do not have a manual for the MEP-016D. If you have one I would appreciate a copy or link. I have the MEP-016A manual and some Yanmar commercial manuals, but nothing on the D.
I think it should have a 24V regulator. The Chinese 186 series motors are copies of Yanmars and the starters are the same size and shape. The 24V starter may work at 12V but Yanmar has different part numbers for 12V and 24V so the correct 12V starter should work without having to engage the...
^^What he said about the electrical.
About the mechanical:
I can email you a copy of the E conversion manual. I've had several Bs and still have a D and an E. One thing I've found is they tend to sit before the auctions. I've had a few with gummed up injector pumps. Make sure you have good...
Luckily it looks like the guy doing my E conversion stripped the starter stud and never finished the conversion. There was practically no soot in the exhaust. The 017 is a 3600RPM 5kW gas genset that at least one guy has mated the gen head to a Yanmar L100 with good results.
The Pow'R Gard...
The only reason we get our hands on them is because the government deems them useless. This determination varies from just having dead batteries to a total basket case that isn't worth fixing. If you get one that looks really good and has very few hours on the meter then chances are you will...
Could be fine. Could have been rebuilt and run without oil. Could be that they let the blue smoke out of the gen head. You never know. ALL of my MEP GL purchases have been either in good running condition or required only very minor fixes. The 003 runs but I haven't gotten into the power...
And at 178lbs they are probably about the lightest Diesel gen set you can find. I think they are very similar to the Baldor DG3E except the new Baldors have Hatz power. I have the TM for the 30D36R and manuals for the Robin (Fuji) DY27 motor. Those are some nice looking gensets you have there.
Don't the 016Bs have low fuel and/or oil pressure safeties? That is what I meant by other variables. There is a board in there with relays that do something.
I have a D and an E. The D is an improved A and the E is an improved B. My E was actually an improved 701A but some panels were missing so now it is just a frame, Yanmar 10HP, and 3kW head. I think the Yanmar L100 deserves more than just 3kW so I'm looking for something like a 017 head for it...
Is the solenoid shutting it down or something else? You can disable or remove the solenoid but make sure you know how to stop it if you do disable or remove anything.
If the solenoid is shutting it down then find out why. Low oil pressure switch? Overtemp? 24V charging circuit failing...
I have a USMC TM for the E conversion. It is 4 meg. I can email if you can't find it online. PM me your email if necessary. It doesn't have schematics, though, just instructions on how to convert from the Onan to the Yanmar, B -> E.
Mine is in the shed under its little cover but I found a pic. Is that not a rectifier in the pic?
It is all brown but I think the little block with wires coming out of it mounted to the block is a rectifier/regulator. I could be mistaken, though.
Edit, I added a closer pic. Do you not have...
I haven't checked my 016D electric belly to tank fuel pump but I will next time I get it out. I'm pretty sure my 30D36R makes 12V with no battery but I'll have to verify that, too.
There should be a rectifier somewhere on the outside of the Yanmar, IIRC.
BTW, I see you on the TDI forum. I...
On some MEPs you have to hold the switch in the start position for a few seconds until the oil pressure builds enough to keep the low oil shutdown from killing the solenoid. There is a starter disconnect so you aren't killing the starter by holding the switch in the start position. I now the...
Battery Warehouse in LA has the correct battery for about $100, shipped dry.
As stated above, check for 28V or so across the battery terminals with the engine running. Remove your dead battery (or just disconnect the + lead) and jump the gen again. If it dies when you disconnect the jump...
Use the 016A TM and Yanmar manuals. I've posted links before for both, IIRC.
I got a 016D from Shelby and it is one of my favorite GL buys ever. It is definitely a keeper. Every gen I've gotten from Shelby has been in very good condition.
