Working On The M561 Gama Goat

As I've said before, a Goat is like me - so far past ugly it's back around to cute again.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Got the bad news on the radiator. It was 75% clogged then had the seam melt on top of that so no way to save it. They can recore it and that's going to run $500 after taxes but at least I should have a radiator that will last as long as I do. Oh, and VOTE FOR THE M561 for MV of the month! It...

Steel Soldiers MV of the month 2015 - July VOTE HERE

Just about 5 days left to vote for the Gama Goat (everyone else the voting ends on Thursday :))

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Keith_J stopped by this afternoon and took all of 30 seconds to get the oil canister back on. With all the spare time he had he went ahead and swapped the fuel filters out as well. Only thing left to do is make sure all the grease points are lubed up well and once the radiator is back in...

    Unimog FLU419 Tractor thing?

Congrats on your purchase I've really wanted one for a while but just can't pull the trigger on something that pricey. Just a heads up, the site rules require you put, at minimum, a state in your location profile.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I forgot to mention that there was no water in the oil when I drained it so if the head is warped it wasn't run long enough afterward to cycle anything through. More than likely we got it shut down in time that it wasn't damaged (fingers crossed). I did do some research for a replacement if...

My new to me Gama Goat

That's why I like mine topless. If I wind up doing the Convoy where we'll be driving out in the sun for a week I might try and add a soft top but I think the hard top would just be too much effort to make it fun to drive.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

It'd take at least 20 years and 9 months for that to come true and I should have the oil filter on by then.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Today's SNAFU: not enough feeling in my fingertips to get the oil canister bolt started. Seems that some days this effing disease really ticks me off. Now I have to wait until one, or more, friends drops by to see if they can manage what I should be able to but can't. I guess a 20 year old...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I've got a spare cover or 2 rattling around the shop somewhere. I'll make sure to dig it out once I get everything powerwashed.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Mine is actually on the inside of the left rear fender and the cover is missing. And since I'm not taking the fan shroud or radiator mounting frame out, if there was anything under there I wouldn't be able to see it.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

It was still messy just not as bad as it would have been without the valve. I'm probably going to have to hire someone that's double jointed to put the filter back in. I did get it out and the old gasket (that was tough digging out too) but haven't tried putting it back on yet.

My new to me Gama Goat

That is an arctic hard top and was an issue item to some units.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

For those of you who've done this, did you remove the air cleaner base to get at the oil filter? The -20 says to see 2-35 for air cleaner removal (in regards to oil change) but mine jumps from 2-34 to 2-36 and I can't seem to find 2-35 to see if they're just talking about the filter and housing...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Since the Goat is down until I get the radiator back figured I could do some maintenance. First order of business is an oil change. The 1st picture is the access panel on the bottom of the Goat that you need to remove in order to drain the oil. Thanks to the sandblaster I have a nice layer of...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

These are the ones Mark gave me and they seem to fit perfectly. If you're not in a hurry the water pump belts are $9 for both from MuttParts and $10 each from NAPA.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Actually the rust is on the deck of my M116 trailer. I took the old belts outside in the light for the picture. Unless you were talking about the radiator and in that case there is some minor surface rust on the bottom but it's very light and the junk on the fins is leaves.

Mark - good advice on swapping the other belts as well. I gotta tell you changing the waterpump belts is a dream compared to the fan belts (and thats with the rad out too). Just push down on the idler arm, slip off the old ones, slip on the new ones and you're done!

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Ok I've had worse tear downs but that doesn't mean it was enjoyable. Anyone have leads on new radiator hoses? Might as well replace them while I'm in there. The inlet is easy but the outlet is a formed hose. Pic of the whole radiator, one of the split seam and one of the fitting from the...

    HMMWV impounded

It wasn't an Army tractor was it? Seems Marines had a habit of "misplacing" some of our equipment.
