Working On The M561 Gama Goat

That is the correct one. When talking with Stephen he said the extra bit that blocks the water passage could be because the military specs wanted a variation in the temp ranges. He seemed to think the NAPA thermostat would work fine under normal circumstances. I'll probably go ahead and put...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

He said the 1st line was just the series number and the "3D" was the serial number. Looks like both of ours have the same number of digits so that should be right. I haven't heard back from him so guess I'll need to follow up tomorrow.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Spoke with Stephen this morning. He said the NAPA thermostat would probably work okay as the military used different specs for temperature control on the engines. He's still going to try and look up what the correct one would be based on the engine serial number. He seemed to think the number...

Diamond in the rough or just plain rough??

I agree its worth $500 but don't believe the seller would entertain that amount. But for one to rebuild he can find a better candidate compared to what this one would cost to even get started.

Diamond in the rough or just plain rough??

If he's willing to sell parts I'm looking for the Black Out Light mount/guard (although the one in the pics looks bent). I don't need the light but the mount/guard is unique to Goats.

Diamond in the rough or just plain rough??

I agree with NDT. Unless it's next to free you can buy a running one out of the classifieds here for less than it'd take to get that any where near worth something. Mine was running, driving, and almost steering and stopping and I've still put over $4k into it beyond the initial purchase...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I'll need to call him next week. While the thermostat NAPA came up with is the same diameter it's too short. The bottom end of the one on the Goat seals another passage and the NAPA one isn't set up for that. Once I get a verifiable part and number I'll post it.

Cross Country convoy - MVPA Bankhead 2015

They are public roads but what's the point? I can drive them on my own. I don't need to be in a group that wants to limit participation. I can find my own hotel if needed so the idea that they have to cut things off 6 months in advance is a bit thin. Like I said, if they had a vehicle...

    Operation "URGENT RESTORATION"

I see where my problem was now, I didn't take the Goat completely apart to get the radiator out. Next time I'll know :)

Cross Country convoy - MVPA Bankhead 2015

It'd be nice if their web site mentioned how much to use (at least I couldn't find it on their site). $25 for 4oz, not bad if all you need is 4oz to get the benefits to vehicles that they claim but if you need a quart?

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Wouldn't it have been leaking during the time the radiator was out? It only started leaking after I test drove it with the new radiator. Also it stopped once I drained the coolant down low enough to pop the thermostat out. I guess I won't know for sure until I get the new thermostat and put...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I'm glad I've changed automotive thermostats before. If you follow the TM you'll spend about an extra hour and have to find a square gasket for the thermostat housing. If you instead just take the hose flange off and pop the thermostat out it's 4 hose clamps and 2 bolts holding the flange on...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Thanks! The only number I could come up with was a NAPA 34033 that had a cross reference to a DD 3-53 in a CAT. I'll check both and see if they cross match or if the one I pulled is incorrect. Any idea on the drip tube? Is there some way with the thermostat stuck that the block stays...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Wrong side the engine isn't it? I followed the line up and it appears to be coming out of the block by #3 cylinder.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Regarding spin on filters - this is what I found on a popular auction site. Both are offered by the same seller: 1) This is for converting both oil AND fuel filters but is a bit pricey but in line given all 3 filters - $297 NEW DETROIT DIESEL 353 453 8V92 12V71 SPIN ON OIL FILTER AND FUEL...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

-20 just says to refill and install pressure cap before starting but we know how often they're wrong. I'll give that a shot tomorrow to see if it changes the level at all. My biggest concern is that the thermostat is bad. Not something I want to pull and check or have to replace but if it...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Spent about 10 minutes typing a post just to have the page freeze on me as I hit "post" and lost it. Why I hate electrical issues #7562: - oil pressure gauge has always been a bit wonky so I pulled the dash panel and checked all the connections and they all looked fine. I wanted to test...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Seems like I remember running across someone selling NOS transmission tunnels (with all the info plates on them) but didn't think I needed one at the time. After pulling mine yesterday I'm rethinking that but now can't remember or find who had them for sale. Anybody run across any in their...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Well I managed to get the seats and the tranny cover out but that was about all I could muster. Climbing up and down so many times yesterday working on the radiator did me in. Fortunately Keith_J was able to swing by this evening and he got the oil filter canister lined up and this time when...

Cross Country convoy - MVPA Bankhead 2015

Hope you were able to register in time (honestly I may rant but hope you get to go). I tried to register in early July and they basically told me to eff off. If you're not registered by April of this year they're not interested in you taking part. Nice for those who know their schedule 6...
