I wouldn't be me if I didn't have a pair of winches on my truck so now that the big 20,000lb Garwood on the rear has been put in some hard use and proven itself it was time to head to the front and see what could be done there. The biggest hurdle with the Mog PTO's is that for all their bells...
The Unimog 406's and 416's for one have this type of locker design. One axle is splined past the outside of the carrier with a splined collar that engages it and has a blocky face spline (sorta reminds you of a love joy coupling) with an air chamber behind it. Hit the air soleniod, pressurizes...
If you have a stock engine and don't plan on doing much with the truck but sprucing it up and paint and tires and canvas and parades...then take care of the tornado, keep the revs down and you'll generally be happy.
(M715 purists may skip ahead here. :-D ) If you have one that's hurt, pull it...
I have 5 or 6 sets of springs with hangers that were originally M35A2 front springs. Its about the easiest way to bob a truck. Once tandems are stripped off frame, figure out where you want the rear axle, find that center in springs, clamp them on, mark holes, and spend next 2 hours drilling...
I’m chocking this info away so maybe the 475hp ‘Silver 92’ Detroit and RTO 12513 OD I've been saving for a 5 ton may work in stock form without having to flop gears in the transmission for a taller overdrive making it and RTOO ßdouble overdrive tranny. With the M939 t-case in high/OD and my...
With the way Detroits are designed if you jack the rear up and go to spin it...it may be locked in if the last effort to the rear was from the driveshaft. Usually a good hard snap on the tire will pop the locker loose as that IS how they operate...open under a deceleration type of condition and...
Quick question: What's the difference in overall track width between the dimension of outside to outside of front tires and outside to outside of rear tires? Or could you post both overall dimensions.
Thanks!
Nice repower! I like the CAT 1160 225hp NA in my deuce crane truck. Decent engines but got the label 'throw away' since they're not 'liner' engines and can't be rebuilt in-chassis. But, they seem very comfy to spin 2700-2800 all day long. [thumbzup]
Yeah, but that's the cost of a good clutch set up...when you should be able to find one junk yard for $50 and not have well over three bills right there. Now you see... HA!
Well...you have options to look at aside from lockers that help with traction bigtime. Tires are one. There is an enormous difference between tires with a full center rib (that will help you get stuck on a wet leaf) or tires with a more open tread will add heaps of traction to the truck. Another...
Thanks! Barrman came through (thanks Tim!) on the exact photos of what I was describing. His combination shows a 350 SBC bolted up. See how the side of the bell is kind of wide like where a pto driveshaft would go though? now consider that there's a mount that the mounting ear sits on and...
