The '77 406 Unimog simply and happily is just 'Moggie.' What a workhorse! The hot stock deuce ended up being 'Smoke' because when the engine was rebuilt in Tooele Army Depot, they must have turned it up a bit. It's the fastest stock deuce truck I've driven and pulls an easy gear over a buddy's...
I still want to see a military lockring come off with an intact tire...ESPECIALLY one the Michelin units with the ultra tough bead area they have. Again, these are NOT like the old truck tires where the ring could blow off and wasn't retained by the entire tire bead.
Shouldn't because the tire is designed for a 10" min width wheel...and especially 'on road.' Off road, run what ya brung! [thumbzup]
Oh, another argument is the pressure on the lockring...(which I'm not hoping to open a can of worms but...) unless you physically tear the bead so it's...
I kept the trailer with stock, fully loaded deuce axles just in case I may want to power it at some point. I thought with the weight of the trailer and the traction it would have...it would be nice to have that be able to help out especially in the soft stuff. Imagine five drive axles and two...
Ouverson's are GREAT hubs and strong as heck too. Only drawback is the 'look' of them on a stock deuce truck has them sticking out like a snout from the hub, pretty much the same with the AVM's too. If you're going to do a front tandem disconnect, you can't go wrong with the Randy Ouverson's...
A buddy of mine has the goat's aluminum 3-53 in some home built loader he's been working on here and there. Think it's been 5yrs in building and not done yet...cash may talk if you really want a true goat engine.
Memphis Equipment, Memphis is a decent place with decent folks. Don't know if Paul still works there but I had talked to him multiple times in the past, good guy.
The branch that used to be in Chambersburg, PA was another story. The parts seemed like seconds and the people were difficult to...
Hey Tim, only if I float the Mog to Norway to find out! :) I sold the Viper to a guy that races in Telemark, Norway last year...um, actually and of '09.
Good to have some time to post!
Well, here’s what’s been soaking up a lot of time for the past year or so, my 1977 Unimog 406. Originally it started life in the German Army with a bulldozer blade on the nose and backhoe on the rear. I feel pretty lucky that the truck has the heavy duty frame which wasn’t the most common...
DO IT! Less compression would allow for some more boost so dump a handful of points and compound turbo it! Rods...not the strongest big end. Piston pins...SOLID...yikes- how about lightening up that bit of dumb mass with a hollow piston pin? Someone should have mentioned piston cooling...
On my old M715 with BBC, Rockwells, and 46" XML's...I had the ubolts set up that same way and that truck had been put through some paces off road to say the least. I made mine and there was NO gap and the bends were clean. Like Tom said above...all is pinned. Only thing I noticed was the...
There's another version of this thread somewhere in the archives...
Ranchhopper, nice 3208 swap. I've had an 1160 in my deuce crane truck for 7 or 8 yrs now. Same size as 3208, but 225hp N/A.
A gas truck, as mentioned will really eat up some fuel even though the big block tall deck 366's...
Hey Fellas,
The Big Dumb Trailer Project (BDTP)has pretty much stayed in the same shape for the last year or so. I figured out how to drive the trailer but was coming increasingly concerned about the pinion strength in the rear most rear axle that would be doing all the trailer driving. The...
I think 'Wolf from Germany' is correct on the brake swap not being a simple on/off conversion. A buddy of mine also told me you're looking about $500 per caliper to rebuild and better hope that you don't have a bad join in a front axle or the price will be AMAZING...and not in the "oh, what a...
From what I understand, the fire trucks and other select rescue vehicles came through with high speed axles that were different than the standard truck. That was for the U900 class (like 406's) and would make sense to carry over to the 1300's.
TOO BIG. I put a 20K on mine and was able to nest it in by moving the radiator back (shorter V8 engine) and that's the only way that thing looks appropriate. The 40 is a way bigger animal yet.
