Doesn't jive for me, but maybe there are in it for the collector factor. Remember- Not only did one guy bid $49,000, there was at least one other person right there at $48,500! It was an auction, not a sealed bid.
It would be pretty cool to have one of the few M35A3s, but not at that price...
John-
I'll give you my 2 cents as I have successfully converted from duals to super singles. My rims are 20x10 double beadlock 2-piece and my tires are Michelin XML 395/85R20 (white deuce with red tanks in the pics). Here are some of the advantages I see with my set up (your mileage may vary)...
If you want "singles", 12.5s would be good radials to run, but remember they are a tad shorter than stock 900x20s. The good news is you can still use your deuce rims.
If you want "super singles", you need to find a wider AND taller tire. Go with some meat like SpicerGear and me. 15.5s or...
MC-
Those look like a great setup. I have been wanting to go to headsets on the fire trucks for quite some time, but here is my dilemna: I think I want a system to do too much. Maybe somebody out there can make some recommendations.
I am looking for something I can use for intercom, 2-way...
Let's see what Tom thinks, but it takes me and a helper about 20-30 minutes to mount a tire. You are basically talking about 20-36 bolts for the beadlock, depending on the rim style. If you have good air, it really isn't too bad. The tires are just heavy. The good thing is you once you get...
So what kind of backspacing will that leave you with? I think mine is 6" and it puts the tires out to the edge of the bed and a couple inches outside the front fenders. I assuming you will have more backspacing, maybe 9" or so? That should line 'em up with the front fenders.
I didn't know you were trying to keep the ten hole centers! That would be cool, no modifications to the original rim, right? Maybe a four-way tapered lug wrench would get the lugs on/off, but I don't think the impact will work. Let me know how it turns out.
SpicerGear, you are quite the shopper! Being 18 ply instead of 14, I think the 15.5s are a good choice. I have the 395s on one deuce and plan to put 15.5s on the next. I haven't weighed any tires or tire/rim combos, but I might work on that. I've got some digital scales that will do it.
As part of the DRMO process, all states have the option to claim property prior to it making it to GL for auction. Each State agency is self-sustaining, meaning they charge minimal "service charges" for items picked up by their donees (cities, counties, schools, prisons, fire departments...
I got mine made at USA 6x6. I like them and they only charge $250, but be prepared to wait for up to six months after you send your money! Not the best customer service in the world. Just send a PM to SpicerGear and ask him about his experiences there.
AJ-
As you know, the deuce stock rims have the offset for the duals. If you want to run singles (and have your tires in the same track) you have at least three options:
1) Flip the rear hubs, mount stock rims in the back like the front. You will have the most narrow stance this way. I...
I don't think the 1" or so difference would be a big deal either, but I have just seen where the Michelin approved rim for the 12.5 was 11". Afterall, a 16" wide 1600R20 "fits" on stock split rim (7"). I know guys who run them.
Nice snag on the tires. The 12.50R20s take a 11" rim, so the A3 wheels should work great if you can get them. The beadlock rims I have available are only 10".
I've seen used 12.5s going for $15-$20 each on ebay if anybody else is shopping. They are a little shorter than the stock 900s, though.
