I'd be tempted to squirt some kind of oil inside the frame rails. WD40 probably isn't persistent enough. Maybe motorcycle chain lube or chainsaw chain lube?
Or it may have hawkers, which will charge best at full charge.
You won't know what you have until you pick it up.
In the 5ton world, slaving a vehicle and running it with completely dead batteries, or batteries that won't take a charge is an invitation to a voltage regulator fail and a bunch...
If those are selling prices, they're getting far more for them than I get.
Clean rust free desert truck brought $4k when I sold it. A buddy bought a nice clean truck for $2500.
Edit - I just hope you guys that are putting high values on them are around the next time I have one to sell...
We have a "want to buy" forum specifically for finding parts.
This is one thing you're doing right - select a truck based on condition, and worry about doors/tops/etc later as those parts can be swapped more easily than condition can be improved.
An M1009 in decent condition is $2500-$4k. $6500 to the right person if you've swapped axles to 14bolt. Most other mods will have zero value. Many will have negative value.
Future value will be impacted by competition with hmmwvs. Highly unlikely that it'll go up substantially.
I've seen trucks started after 15 years of sitting, with no ill effects.
I've seen a diesel engine nearly ruined by monthly maintenance idling for an hour per month. It poured black smoke for hours after being started, and was unable to run at capacity. Over a period of hours it was gradually...
Let's examine what happens in each case -
Sitting unused : seals dry, lubricant steadily drains into the crankcase, batteries trickle down.
Idling without a load, even at high rpm : the heavier portion of diesel fuel is left unburned and condenses on the cylinder walls, and on all exhaust...
I mentioned this in your cucv idling thread. I failed to convince you there.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet_stacking
Note that wet stacking is NOT rpm dependant. It is load dependant. Idling, even at 190-200* and 1600rpm with no load is more harmful than just letting it sit.
My opinion...
The only truck I've ever previewed is also the only truck to break down on the way home. It dumped the coolant into the oil about 300 miles out of ft riley. Go figure....
The HMMWV does a very good job combining high ground clearance, low center of gravity, and room for 37's. Start lifting it, and you're giving up some of that low center of gravity and not really getting anything in return.
That being said, old springs certainly sag. I suspect new springs...
That's like suggesting an M14 to a guy who has decided he wants an M4.
Never mind that the M14 has three times the power and twice the range. Never mind that the M14 has a better trigger, and better sights, or that the M4 makes you stick your head up to fire from behind cover and the M14 does...
