according to the old ord-9 for the m34/34 you snug the inner nut down while turning the drum, at snug, back off 1/8 , put your retainer on then tighten the outer, if you have to, back off the inner a bit (this wont be much) so the retainer fits

instead of 1/72 scale kits, thay are a bit small, try 1/35 scale, when you find a 1/35 deuce, hobby fan makes two gun truck converson kits (HF-027, HF-028). also out in the 1/35 world is a m51 kit, a m49 kit, a 9 something cargo kit, the 900 and the 51 could be combined to make a m54 to be used...

see if the bypass screw on the back of the fuel shut off valve is turned in, if it is this will cause the problem, if it is turn it out. if it is turned, WHY????
