I know what wire your referring to. At the under-dash starter relay, the purple with white tracer is the 12volt (with the key in the start position) wire, that triggers the start relay. The relay then closes and supplies the starter solenoid with 24 volts.
I used a cold weather front cover one year, didn't like how it obscures the headlights. I've used a pizza box lid, ever since. You should see the look I get when I stop at a convenience store and ask for a large pizza box, hold the pizza.

For now, you better use a battery charger and charge your front battery overnight, so you can get to work tomorrow.
You could swap alternators(positions) and then you could probably start your truck all...
The pic I posted is from a retailer and it was found searching the part number(22514861) in the -20P. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SMP-NS41/ notice they call it a neutral saftey switch and reverse light switch!
My switch in my truck, does NOT look like that switch(exactly). Mine appears...

Looks more like a commercial or free publicity, than a reality show.
It take less than an hour, with the right tools. You'll need an impact wrench to remove the pulley nut. Then, just a screwdriver and a few small sockets or nut-drivers. You can buy the parts for about $40.
A local rebuild shop should be able to fix it for around $100.

Post# 56 in the CUCV wiki has the alt part number for the drivers side alt.
Belt numbers are listed in the WIKI also.

Ok, so it must be the neutral safety switch. It should plug into the same switch unit as the backup lights(The TM calls for the switch shown in the pic I posted below). Look at this pic, it would go on the top left 2 terminals.(cooper colored) But my truck had a plastic cover on those 2...
