you can swap to whatever you want, fairly common, check out g741, lots of threads on brake lights. If you look at the original wiring diagram only one side was a tail light, the other was blackout only, hence having two different lights.

you may want to go to dual carbs. It wasn't a stock option on the M37 but that engine did have a twin carb option. I think 7* might be a bit too far advanced. 4*btdc is considered optimum by the engine builders for these things. What do you have for idle rpm? You may have the idle a bit too fast...

brass is copper and zinc, bronze is typically copper and tin. Bronze is very hard and typically brittle while brass is much more malleable. Can't help you on the change though, g741 would be able to help you better I imagine. I haven't checked on my '51 but will next week

I just my M37 from Maine a few months ago as well, although I live here... Definitely couldn't beat the price... $1200 for mine in running condition with minimal rust. The fire departments treated them well up here that's for sure
