Unless you really need to get that far off road, a civilian model will work better for most commercial undertakings.
I used my M51 for stone, rock & dirt hauling for two years before I got a commercial dump truck.
The military makes these trucks with minimal personal comfort in mind, this...
The weld really does look like pigeon poop.
That being said, it was adequate for it's purpose, as the stabilizers haven't fallen off yet.
It is rather common to weld to the back end of a truck frame, not much twisting happens at the very rear of the frame.
Nice old deuce,carry on.
I have an 11 foot funnel plow on my dump, most of the time you can't tell that you are even pushing snow, maybe 18" of wet, packed snow will make it grunt, but mostly you don't notice the difference between blade up and blade down.
I plowed with a 1 ton truck for many years, believe me, I could...
I was called in to survey a stationary engine, it had caused no end of problems to the owner.
Backfiring when hot, won't accept a load, generally, it was fubar.
Owner changed just about every thing imaginable, still ran like crap.
He went to the extent of pulling the head, and having the...
Dt 466 is one of the best mid size truck engines made, gets my vote.
I work with a mixed fleet of some 65-70 trucks, all types and makes, never had to make anything than minor repairs on the 466.
I have a 12volt tap at the battery jumper, runs defrost fan.
I switch the batteries one for the other occasionally, this helps to keep things even.
Not an elegant fix, but it works.
A Marine Corps motor sergeant I worked with 25 years ago told me about a trick he learned. Seams to be,in the years after the second world war, the Corps was not getting any new vehicles, only cast-offs from the other services. (AT LEAST, THIS WAS THE CASE WHERE HE WAS STATIONED)
In order to...
mudguppy hit it dead-on in an earlier post
dt 466 international
best (In my view) midsize truck engine built in the last twenty years
get one from a former state highway truck and you will have low miles to boot ( what has 6 wheels and sleeps two?)
the ones near me are equipped with full...
That engine is the 344 Buda. Allis Chalmers has been using them since the '50's
Buda is still in business, they make big industrial and stationary engines.
I have this engine in my hd6 'dozer. (mine is a bit older, and no turbo, slightly different design on the cylinder head also.)
it is...
Pull the valve covers.
One by one, cut out cylinders by bearing down on the injector rocker, (hammer handle works well for this).
The noisy rod will be evident when you cut out that cylinder.
I have fond memories , driving my newly aquired m-51 to my home in Pennsylvania.
Truck was purchased from DRMS at Fort Drum, Ny.
What a ride.
Why would you deny yourself an event that may become engraved upon the back of your mind till your very last day?
How do you intend to deal with the hood clearance problem when you add the turbo and the jake?
If you use this much, it won't take long for you to get tired of the noise.(or maybe go deaf, then there will be no issue).
nice project, good pics.
I added turbo to mine, make sure you get ALL the...
